Default Panic Playdate... is this a joke?

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Playdate_(console)

A binary (literally black-and-white) 400 x 240 screen. In 2019. For $150. Oh, and each game will be automatically downloaded, its contents kept secret until the week of its release. At least you'll be able to side-load the old games, but why not give us the option of downloading or not downloading the new game? And why not give us color? Black and white is fine if it's a legitimately old (pre-Game Boy Color) handheld from when technology was limited, like the Game Boy or the Mega Duck. Even those gave you multiple grayscale levels though.

This thing is going to flop hard and 20 years from now is going to be just a rare curiosity.
Real collectors drive Hondas, Toyotas, Chevys, Fords, etc... not Rolls Royces.

I actually think it's neat. It's not designed to be a million seller, it's a niche product that will find a small audience and maybe lead to some creative game designs as a result of the self-imposed limitations of the hardware.

Like the Gizmondo then. Or more like the Game.com with the black and white screen.

To be fair. Gizmondo and Game.com were designed to be actual contenders. They just failed miserably at being one. This thing is designed to be a novelty for a 20/30 somethingdude who isn't really into gaming anymore but this is an amusing device for them or gagdet people but not really into gaming anymore outside of nostalgia.

Game.com and Gizmondo were calling out the Gameboy/DS directly. Esp Game.com TV ads.

Gizmondo. Well Mafia man crashed his ferrari and split it in half and was arrested for other legal problems lol. Oh and Game.com and Gizmondo were not the same company despite a similar name in Tiger Electronics vs Tiger Telematics.

I remember seeing Game.com stuff at my local Best Buy and really wanting it just based on the covers for the games. sounds like I didnt miss much. I remember not long ago you could get on eBay new sealed Game.com games for $7-15 a piece. I dont know if theyre still at that price. I almost jumped on the chance but realized I have no nostalgia for shitty products that are nearly unplayable. granted if I saw them at a garage sale for 25 cents id buy, but i can think of way better things to spend seven dollars on

A few years later, Playdate is now considered pretty cool, at least judging from most of the reviews I've seen. Of course, the screen not being backlit is a big negative, and getting your hands on one. Gotta wait your turn, or pay crazy eBay prices. I pre-ordered it almost two years ago and it's still hasn't been shipped.
