Default Cranky Kong and Donkey Kong Jr.

So can anyone clear this up for me? Because for the last 20+ years I have always been under the impression that the guy who throws barrels at Jumpman in the 1981 arcade game Donkey Kong is the guy who calls himself Cranky Kong in Donkey Kong Country. The guy calling himself Donkey Kong in that same game is the guy calling himself Donkey Kong Jr. in Super Mario Kart as well as the arcade game Donkey Kong Junior.

Do I have this right? I always made this assumption based on the opening of DKC where Cranky is on the steel beams. Why would he be chillin up there if he hadnt been there 14 years ago?

Cranky Kong is the original DK, Donkey Kong Jr. is his son, and the DK in Donkey Kong Country is Jr.'s son and Cranky's grandson. So the DK in DKC would technically be Donkey Kong the third or whatever.

I never heard that before. I thought tie wearing DK was DK Jr. this whole time

I'd assumed Cranky Kong was the original DK and tie wearing DK was DK Junior grown up, or perhaps the grandson, in which case Junior would have been phased out of the scene with no fanfare.

What's confusing is all the missing family members. Like, DK III has a sibling, because Diddy is his nephew. DK Jr. also has a sibling because Chunky and Kiddy are DK III's cousins. And Dixie and Tiny are cousins of Chunky and Kiddy too, I guess from a sibling of whoever married DK Jr.'s sibling, otherwise Diddy and Dixie are both related and dating, haha. I don't think Nintendo or Rare ever thought anyone would care to figure out the DK family tree.

The manual for Donkey Kong Country calls Cranky DK's "granddad" and explicitly says he was the original Donkey Kong.

So somehow the Donkey Kong franchise is more convoluted than the Terminator franchise?
