Default How many video games do you own?

I did a quick search and I am surprised this question hasn't been asked.

I own at least 588 copies of physical games and only 1 digital game. I've been actively collecting since 2011 but I still own games that were initially purchased for me in the 90s. I'm not sure if my PriceCharting number is only counting loose titles or if it also includes games where I just have the box and manual.

I also have hundreds of magazines, maybe thousands. Never counted.

By the numbers, complete "official" games in my collection includes:

    Atari 5200 - 46
    Atari 2600 - 23
    Atari Jaguar - 19
    Atari Lynx - 54
    Microsoft Xbox - 1002
    Microsoft Xbox 360 - 567
    Microsoft Xbox One - 341
    NEC PC Engine - 251
    Nintendo 3DS - 300
    Nintendo DS - 596
    Nintendo Gameboy - 211
    Nintendo Gameboy Advance - 513
    Nintendo Gameboy Color - 169
    Nintendo Gamecube - 305
    Nintendo N64 - 165
    Nintendo NES - 489
    Nintendo Super NES - 532
    Nintendo Switch - 280
    Nintendo Wii - 611
    Nintendo WiiU - 120
    Sega 32X - 16
    Sega CD - 121
    Sega Dreamcast - 272
    Sega Game Gear - 163
    Sega Genesis - 508
    Sega Master System - 105
    Sega Saturn - 440
    Sony Playstation - 1962
    Sony Playstation 2 - 2047
    Sony Playstation 3 - 567
    Sony Playstation 4 - 1546
    Sony Playstation PSP - 632
    Sony Vita - 185
    Total = 15,156

I've collected quite a few homebrew and fan translated games as well and most are at least boxed.
I have a bunch of Amiibo toy's, but I think I have all the toy's and expansions for Disney Infinity, LEGO Dimension, Starlink, and Skylander's games

The November 2020 issue 331 of Gameinformer magazine claimed the world's largest collection of more than 11,000 video games was sold in 2014. I read that and thought that number was probably too small. I doubt my collection would put me in the top 1,000 collector's world wide. But what's more interesting than numbers is what's in your collection and why.

Backloggery.com says I have 801 games, and that 55% of them haven't been finished. I know I have about 400 Steam games and only 313 of them are on Backloggery, so I probably have closer to 900.

It's a lot; when I see this number, I feel like I don't need any more. But then the Steam Summer / Winter Sale comes around, and there's something for a REALLY good deal...

Truth. I have been culling my collection so that I only have games I will play and enjoy...with the exception of Steam games, which you can't get rid of. But some of the GBA / PS1 games that I look at and realize I won't ever get around to playing? Gone. Don't want it collecting dust around here.

How do you have 1001 Xbox games when there were only 8XX NTSC titles released? Unless youre counting PAL, NTSCJ or cover variants

The Xbox was the only library I tried for a complete collection. I was so intent on it that I purchased European and Japanese consoles and games. I collected anything and everything Xbox. Consoles, pre-order bonus's, swag of every kind. 1001 may have included variants. I don't really remember now because frankly, I've moved on. I will say that that experience turned me off to complete library collecting. It's funner to collect what I want to collect, rather than what I have to collect. Still, I am majorly proud of it.

There was a thread in the old Classic Discussions area like this, but the Search function of the forum is so inaccurate (I can't search for the phrase "how many games" in titles, it'll only look for the word "games" which gives me practically every thread ever made here) I can't just cut and paste my old reply with more modern additions. So here goes, from shaky memory, so these numbers are roughly approximate. "Close enough" only works with hand grenades, horseshoes, and video game collections as the saying goes.

    Atari 2600 - 400
    Atari 5200 - 50
    Atari 7800 - 45
    Atari XEGS - 18
    Atari Lynx - 60
    Atari Jaguar - 40
    Intellivision - 90
    Colecovision - 40
    Vectrex - 7
    Magnavox Odyssey 2 - 20
    Fairchild Channel F - 1
    Astrocade - 12
    Emerson Arcadia 2001 - 5
    Microvision - 1
    Sega SG-1000 - 1
    Nintendo Entertainment System - 60
    Sega Master System - 30
    SNES - 25
    Sega Genesis - 150
    TurboGrafx-16/TurboDuo/PC Engine - 50
    ActionMaxx - 3
    ViewMaster Interactivision - 1
    Supervision - 3
    Sega Game Gear - 20
    GameBoy/GameBoy Color - 4
    Sega CD - 30
    Sega 32X - 12
    3DO - 15
Pioneer Laseractive (with Sega Pak) - 2
    Philips CD-i - 30
    Memorex VIS - 10
    Playstation - 30
    Sega Saturn - 20
    VirtualBoy - 7
    Nintendo 64 - 6
    Tiger R-Zone - 5
    Game.com - 4
    Sega Dreamcast - 100
    Neo-Geo Pocket Color - 15
    Nuon - 7
    GameBoy Advance - 15
    Playstation 2 - 80
    GameCube - 160
    Xbox - 250
    GameWave - 5
    XaviX GamePort - 4
    Tapwave Zodiac - 4
    Nokia N-Gage QD - 45
    Gizmondo - 6
    Nintendo DS - 5
    Nintendo Wii - 120
    Xbox 360 - 70
    Playstation 3 - 350
    Nintendo Wii-U - 15
Playstation 4 - I'm just starting to collect for it so who knows where it'll end? At the moment, probably 40.

I'm sure I'm forgetting something obscure, so I'll probably update this in a few days when I finally remember that oddball console that nobody ever appreciated but I still had to own one.

I can definitely see why you'd be turned off from "completing a set" when you are looking at such winners as "And 1 Streetball" as well as its variant that has the soundtrack, the countless World War 2 shooters, the Platinum Hits as well as Best of Platinum Hits variants. Xbox has one of the most vanilla libraries of games I've ever seen on a console. There are a few standout titles that were exclusive to the platform but a lot of the best games on the system were on GameCube and PS2 as well. I don't know the exact number of Xbox games I have but I don't think I'll go for a complete collection for a long time given how much crap is on the system

    * 304 physical games (compilations counted as one game)
    * 103 digital purchases (55 on Nintendo systems and 48 on Steam) -- Some of these are duplicates of games I own physical copies of, however most have additional emulation features that the originals do not, such as save states
    * 2 multi-game plug-and-play units
    * 3 LCD handheld games

Hmm, I wonder how many games in total I have access to when counting each compilation game separately. I think I own Sonic the Hedgehog at least 5 different ways partly due to this, so at what point do I stop counting tiny emulation options as separate 'games'? I'm overthinking it.....

1,271 games in total, some are digital releases, but a majority are physical releases.

Two places come immediately to mind:

Backloggery.com - you type whatever you want in the game name, then track a bunch of things: ##/## achievements, "completed" or "beaten" or "unplayed", system, etc.

Videogamegeek.com - your games have to fit within a fixed list of things in their catalogue. You can submit requests to add new things to the catalog, including images of games. I am not sure how good their digital-only stuff is - whether they have all the thousands of Steam games that have been released.

I usually use Backloggery.com but I should probably take a closer look at VGG - I have some there, not everything.

I'm too lazy to keep track, but I've got over 250 PS4 games, over 90 but less than 100 Vita games, around 100 3DS games, around 120-140 PS3 games, around 100 DS games, around 90 PSP games, 10 Wii U games, around 120 PS2 games, 10-20 Gamecube games, 20-40 GBA games, 90-100 PS1 games, don't know how many N64 games, not a lot, around 20-30 SNES games, 30-40 NES games, also not sure how many Game Boy games. Around 50-60 Sega Genesis and three Sega CD games. At the least, I'd say over 1000.
Everything in the above post is opinion unless stated otherwise.

Legally, around 10k games. However, Im slowly reducing so I expect that amount to drop by half ina few years. Just want to have those I really cherish and not garbage (like most LRG releases...lol)

Where do you guys store your collections? Basement with shelving? Boxes in storage unit? Man cave?

Right now I have most my collection in storage. Eventually when I own a house, I want to have them in my basement

Spartacus, you're definitely in the top 1,000.

I'm still in the sub-1,000 games club myself, but barely. Probably somewhere around 800-900, maybe even in the 900s.
Real collectors drive Hondas, Toyotas, Chevys, Fords, etc... not Rolls Royces.
