The first example that comes to mind is Crystalis, released in 1990. In the opening scenes, it states that October 1st, 1997 is "the End Day". Did they really think that seven years into the future, monsters would roam the Earth and we would revert back to medieval times?

Mega Man games were notoriously bad at predicting the future. In Mega Man 2, the events transpire in the year 200X. The developers imagined that robots could potentially take over 11-20 years from the time the game was released.

Robotron 2084 seems somewhat grounded in reality considering they were about 100 years out. Still have some time to prepare for the robot apocalypse (63 years as of this writing.)

The original Twisted Metal took place in 2010, didn't it? I'd have to look it up.

What are some other examples of games where the "future is scary" narrative ended up being way off?
