Here's my first for the year. Short game overall, but the perfect length for what it is. By the time I had it beat, I had got my fill and was ready to move on.

Both endings knocked out, but still a little more to do. I'm glad I gave this game a shot despite all the harsh words out there about it.

I wasn't expecting to have another game beaten so quickly, but that's only because I didn't know Lucifer Ring is so bare-bones. No complaints there, though. I appreciate games that value my time, so I'm totally cool with a short game. It's got nothing on the 2D greats before it, and I say that as someone who isn't even that especially fond of the beat-em-up genre, but it's a goofy game that was worth the tiny bit of money and time I invested into it. Now, for the people who drop hundreds of dollars on a physical copy... I just hope they're mostly doing so to get a collectible haha.

I was mostly playing just to amuse my daughter, but it feels good to give this game a serious revisit. It's my first time beating it since the '90s, as best as I can recall. I remember having a heck of a time with the 150cc cups as a kid, so I guess I'll see how tough they are for me now.

Streets of Rage Remake is probably my favorite beat 'em up of all time. I had no idea they released an updated version (which is already several years old) that adds 16:9 support, some new tunes, and other features. I hated to lose my old save file with everything purchased in the store and several dozen hours playtime on it, but it was worth it for the upgrades.

I think beating this game may have shaved a tiny bit off my life span, haha. Maybe shmup aficionados would think nothing of it, but I'm proud of myself for getting through this one, regardless of how many continues it took.

This one is called Kaisoku Tenshi in Japan, which is translated into English on the case as "The Rapid Angel", but for the US PSN release, it was just called "Rapid Angel". I got the good ending, which apparently is solely determined on if you attack a random cat in the first stage or not, haha. (Leave it alone to get the good ending.)

    4. Quake (Xbox One) 03/15

I bought this when it was first released and played it on my old cutting edge 200mhz Pentium. As much of a classic as it was I don't think I ever played beyond the first few levels in single player, all my time was spent on multiplayer or with mods, so it was a new experience for me. Loved it. It's so much more straightforward and arcadey than the sequel, and the 60fps visuals look great.

Exactly a month since my last beaten game, go figure. Funny how I was playing home console games on a handheld before, and now I beat a handheld game while playing it on a home console. It's probably been decades since the last time I used a Super Game Boy to beat a game.

    5. Call of Duty: Black Ops III (Xbox One) 04/22

The story in this one is a bit rubbish, the whole "it was just a dream" aspect applied liberally to everything just ends up being pretentious and stupid.

The entire campaign is also too dark, forcing me to play almost the entire thing with the flashing, annoying cybernetic vision thing on. Black enemies positioned in shadows on a darkened level with no lights is not fun at all.

Slept on this one forever and didn't even know it existed. It's a fantastic, high quality Contra clone that's worth every penny. Blazing Chrome was a great game but I think I may like this one even more, due to it having a slightly more 8-bit rather than 16-bit aesthetic.

    7. Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon (Xbox One) 05/26
    8. Street Fighter 6 (Xbox Series X) 05/27

Bloodstained is such a great game, I like it as much or maybe more than the NES Castlevania series. I did a regular run on the Switch a while back but this run was sacrificing all your companions to gain the extra abilities. Awesome game.

Street Fighter 6, what a gigantic disappointment. SFII is by far my most favorite game of all time. I felt III was forgettable, IV was really good, never touched V because I don't own a PS4. 6 is just horrible to me. Got it on clearance for $35 thinking it would be a while before I would ever see it at a lower price, wish I hadn't even bothered.

I ran through arcade mode, which was a whopping 5 fights, and made it through a 1CC on my first try without even losing a round or knowing any of the mechanics or special moves. The characters are unappealing and dumb, the aesthetics are garish and gaudy, the whole package is a visual eyesore. I'm sure it and KoF XV are solid games for the kids today to get into, but for a jaded old man like myself both have zero appeal.

Nothing for May, but at least I squeezed in something for June. Doubt I'll have another beaten game soon. I'm still in the thick of Star Ocean 5, but I figured I'd take a little break from it to finish off Mutant Blobs Attack while I have a rush job with a tight deadline. If I'm gonna be reading all day for work, then I'd rather my entertainment at night be light on text. Now to decide if I want to pursue the remaining three trophies, two of which involving a lot of replaying stages to collect everything.

Took me around three months, without any large breaks and barely touching any other games, but I finally cleared the main story in Star Ocean 5. It's not gonna do my yearly total any favors, but I'm glad I finally got to this game, even if it's far from the best Star Ocean.

I've yet to earn the "true ending", but per my usual "credits roll = beating a game" stance, I'm adding this to my list now. I should have the proper ending soon enough anyway.

Just a little quickie before probably getting back into the SO5 post-game dungeon. Assuming I haven't already completely lost my steam with that game.
