Infinity Strash: Dragon Quest The Adventure of Dai
Dragon Quest Dai is a retelling of DQ3, where the Dragon Lord was defeated but took the hero down with him. Which is literally the story you will see if you view the intro from DQ3 GBC and SFC. This is sorta explained somewhere down the line of Dai. That being said there is also another Dragon Quest Anime outside of Dai, most likely from the 1980's, it is reflecting on.
Dragon Quest Dai gets a playable novel, with some action game scenario's where you can relive Dai's experiences in order to regain his memory. If you could actually regain them all you will even be able to get to the grand battle where the Comic left off.
Dai never finished at all, but literally setup the party of four, that reflects the fake-hero-party. Again since Dragon Ball is more or less the same thing occuring but Dai is fictional ancient times. Dai is like "Christ" being sent down to "!!set the stage of events for the main game!!".

About the Animated 20XX Remake.
literally "emphasized" everything while mashing down actual events of the story.
Unlike the original Animation, where Dai and others are brightly colored, real blood ( blood every second ), and story have actual characters. Dai remake have long drawn out Naruto ( you know filler ) like ramblings with emphasized blood, where everything is washed out and manga ( paper colored ). You could be sitting there and waiting for the action to happen ( unlike the Animation from 1991 ). Again if you enjoy DQai, you should check out the game.
But at least because Dai never finished and never revealed the big-baddie at all. That is the one good thing about this. Also yes you can continue all the way to the end and have a special battle of sorts.
