Default Proper way to hold a PS1 or PS2 controller?

I know this sounds really dumb, but what is the proper way? Granted I don't have too many games yet, and no fighting games that require whatever moves to be executed....but I might as well learn the proper way to hold this thing before I become too comfortable with the wrong way. For L1/L2 and R1/R2 buttons:

Do you operate both the front and back buttons with your index finger, OR do you put both your index finger AND your middle finger up top and operate the "1" buttons with your indexes and "2" buttons with your middles.

    ???

Yes, I'm asking this, as I don't know whether there's games where I need to push L1+L2 simulateously which would require both fingers or at least a really big finger or some kind of 'sweep' with one finger.

Not many games use the R2 button. IF a game uses both R1 and R2 buttons, then I suppose I'd use 2 fingers, but the only game I can ever remember having to actually use both buttons within seconds of each other is amplitude MAYBE.

Depends on the game for me. If playing Amplitude, then I have fingers on both buttons (index and middle). If playing an adventure game (or RPG--Final Fantasy comes to mind) when I rarely use it, I'll usually just use my middle finger.

Fighting games? Nothing beats a joystick instead of a controller though.

FreQuency, Amplitude, Metal Gear Solid 2, and most racing games use close to all the shoulder buttons. There's more to that list, I just am not thinking at the current time.

I personally use both my index and middle finger.

I'd say the proper was is any way that you feel comfortable doing.

If you want to hold it upside down and smack the r and l buttons with your toes so be it. Just do what's comfy.

The proper way to hold a PS2 controller is to throw it away, and turn on you gamecube.
Somebody make me a "CGE 2k7 Attendee banner" so I don't have to use this lame text
