Default Final Fantasy Origins - Final Fantsy 1 Question

In NORMAL mode, is this game just as hard as it's NES counterpart? I'm up to the Earth cave right now on the PS1 version, and it just seems a little bit easier... I don't think I've even died once, and I've only done the back and forth leveling up for 10-15 minutes, I remember having to fight ogres for HOURS on the NES version. (Although I think I DID get lucky with astos, my 2 mages went down in 2 rounds, and he just couldn't kill my fighters for some reason as I chipped his health down over about 10 rounds)

Based on my experience with it (FF1 in Origins was the last RPG I beat...working on FFV in Anthology now), it's exactly the same difficulty-wise. The memo save does make things slightly easier though.

Of course, I didn't get very far in the original NES cartridge...

Just got my ass repeatedly handed to me in the earth dungeon after posting this, so I guess that's that

I would imagine the biggest hurdle in difficulty between the two is the fact that in the original NES version, if you killed an enemy and someone still had an attack set on him, they didn't attack the next in line, they just hit air. In the remake, they go onto the next in line.

You can turn off that feature so it plays like the original. My only gripe is that the baddies' names are different, so it's confusing to the point where i can't use my Nintendo Power Strategy Guide from 1989 or so...

Actually, I DID turn off that option, more strategic that way

    Couple notices...

Dia1 - This is a BETTER translation than HARM??!

Golden Needle - Again, this is a BETTER translation than SOFT?!

Temple of Fiends fit better than whatever they renamed it to.

Bunch of other translation quirks that I really didn't think were BETTER, or necessary at all, but can't think of them off the top of my head... Oh, Nitro Powder instead of TNT? Unnecessary.

I was thinking that they re-translated directly from the Jap version, and that maybe this is more 'true' to the original than the US NES release? Either way, for the fact that it WAS released here before, they should have kept the names of items/spells/baddies the same.

I get to fight a baddie, and I can't tell exactly WHAT each is because in all those games, you have the same 'designed' characters for several different baddies, with the only other difference being different color schemes.

I really like Final Fantasy Orgins. The story has the poor translations taken out of it, the names have the more 'proper' Japanese names, and the music was REALLY a nice improvement. So much so I bought the soundtrack.

I really have to kick Square in the nuts for not putting FF3 out on PSX! Why didn't they?!? They would have the WHOLE Final Fantasy series (up through IX, of course) all on one console, but they didn't. Final Fantasy Chronicles could have been FF3 and FF4. Would have been perfect.

    FF1-FF2 (one package, FF Origins)
    FF3-FF4 (SHOULD HAVE BEEN)
    FF5-FF6 (one package, FF Anthology)
    FF7
    FF8
    FF9

    Why, Square, Why?

It is actually a direct port of the Wonderswan version that was released in Japan, and is a direct translation of the dialogue in that game rather than the original NES version.

Give Square credit for releasing the games for the PlayStation over here -- we had to wait, but eventuly we got FF4, 5, and 6, as well as Chrono Trigger, all ported to the PSX with minor updates. FF 1 and 2 were remade for the WonderSwan in Japan, and Square decided there was enough fans in the States that they could release both games on one bargin CD.

If I recall correctly, FF3 was posted to the WonderSwan as well but was never released when the ssytem seemed on it's last legs. It was dropped by Bandai last year. MAYBE Square might be convienced to port it to the PSX -- but it still does'nt promise a US release.

We're lucky to get ANY remakes. Enix axed plans to release the remake of DW 4 here in the States (my favorite game in the series, that REALLY pissed me off). Sega is remaking Phantasy Star 4 for the PSX, but again, it does'nt seem likly we'll see that over here. Give Square a little credit.

Seriously though, What does Dia1, Dia2, and Dia3 stand for?
They replaced the HARM spells, but for the life of my, I can NOT understand what Dia is supposed to mean.

    Diabolic? Diapers? Dialysys? Diameter? Diakickyourundeadass?

Did they retranslate "I, Garland, will knock you all down!"?

After all, they kept "You spoony bard!" in the PSX release of FF4.

Hey, if they had changes You Spoony Bard, they probably would have pissed off a lot of people. That would be like re-releasing Zero Wing and changing AYBABTU.

Despite all the text changes in FF1, it's really FF4 that had a RADICAL and huge text change and different translation.
