Default How do you hold your Vectrex controller?

I usually hold mine like an NES controller, but I've seen it used like an arcade stick. I'm just curious as to what way is most common.

Never even *thought* about holding it like a game pad! It's always been on a table or countertop. Now that my Vectrex is housed in a mini-cade cabinet I really don't have a choice.

It works fine most of the time, but I have to switch to using fingers on the buttons for games that use all of them (I still use my thumb on the stick).

Arcade stick, definitely. It's WAY too ungainly to try to hold in my girlish hands
And which NES controller did YOU mean?

You're right, I should have been more specific (the pad that came with the system in case someone actually couldn't figure that out) even though I use my NES Advantage pad-style too (it fits surprisingly well in your hand).

I had just assumed you meant the Advantage, due to the size similarity. How big are your hands? I could never manage to hold EITHER controller that way without mine getting VERY fatigued and cramped.

i switch between both ways... i have held it like an NES pad for quite a long time, and i have also used it like a table joystick...
now i use a big ass vectorcade, so i dont have the hand holding option anymore.

I have the John Dondzilla Genesis controller hack, so it's a moot point. I hold it like a Genesis controller. Though, if I was *forced* to use the original stick, it's laying flat and used like an arcade stick, not as a handheld. Hard to use all 4 buttons if held like an NES controller in my opinion.

Left hand: Middle, ring, and pinky fingers in conjunction with palm wrapped in 'C' shape around bottom, side, and top of controller, thumb and index finger on stick. Gain leverage by pressing right side of controller onto inside of right thigh.

Right hand: 1 finger on each button, Neo Geo controller style.

I'm seriously considering modding a controller or two for this thing.

HAHA, I have one up on that. While it hasn't arrived yet, soon I will be using the PSX adapter so i can use a Dual Shock controller on my Vectrex.

it depends on the game i'm playing, most of the time its a tabletop method. once i got my minicade cabinet i was really enjoying the button slapping arcade style gameplay. when the controller is mounted into a metal body it has that gravity that made playing scramble really fun. then it occured to me that if i should break the minicade controller i'd have to tear the cab apart to get it replaced! after that i got ahold of a second vectrex for everyday play and reserve the cab one for "musuem" use. i still fire it up at some of the trademeets to harvest quarters of course.
