Default EGM Article: Kids Playing Classic Games

I remember hearing about this article a few weeks ago, but in case you didn't get a chance to read it, now it's online.

Do you think the kids were prompted at all on this thing? I have 12 and 13 year old neices and I can't imagine them saying most of this stuff. They're not big gamers, but still ...

whoops? Did I mention that out loud? Pardon me,it was MOST unintentional!

Anyway, yes the article seemed a bit staged to me, I've NEVER met kids who talk like that. Who knows why they chose to publish such an ignorant article? I'd rather see a whole article dedicated to playing RPG's with your feet......and I HATE RPGs.

Dad (showing son Tetris): "Here's a timeless classic we used to play when I was young!"

Son: "Why don't the blocks explode? This game is stupid."

Dad: "Get your shit packed, you're going to the orphanage."

I think we already did this.

    http://www.digitpress.com/forum/view...&highlight=egm

But yeah, it's supposed to be a humorous piece, a play on the whole "these kids today got no respect for the classics!" thing.

I said the same thing when I first read this. Kids that young are not witty or intelligent enough to say half of the things that were quoted in that article. I'm sure the staff at EGM took a few liberties when editing it to make it more interesting. I still thought it was pretty funny though. The whole point of it is to prove how naive kids today are when it comes to retro vids and they proved that point very well in the article (tainted or not).

As a side note, does anyone else notice how EGM has been stealing article ideas for the past 4 or 5 months from Q magazine? Q is one of those expensive glossy British rock magazines that you can pick up most major book chains. It's like Rolling Stone but 10x's hipper & intelligent. Anyway, that whole "kids playing retro vids" idea was taken from an piece in Q 2 years ago where they played old rock & pop songs (like Bowie and Beatles) to 10-12 year old kids and noted their reactions to them. All their reactions were like "this sucks, play some No Doubt." Ever since EGM got it's new look several months ago, I noticed several other article concepts that look like they have been taken directly from the pages of Q. Coincidence?

Man. I had no idea what a "Hooker" was at the age of 9-11. geez.... I think that was sooooo set up, I can just see the EGM editors saying "okay kids tell us how much you hate this game, joystick, sounds, and graphics. describe as many flaws as possible, and see if you can relate them somehow to modern games. Poor kids.

Meh, I only read Game Informer magazine-wise anymore. Not that it's great or anything, but it's always around me, heh.

Maybe we can turn this thread into real-life experiences some of us have had with the younger generation and games?

One time my nephew (age 7) came over and I was playing Tony Hawk 3 (PSX). I asked him if he wanted to play too -- he said yes, so I put it on 2 player mode. Seconds later, he asks me, "so, how do we shoot each other?" "We don't shoot each other, we do tricks," I explained. Moments later, he asks, "how do we kill each other?" "We DON'T kill each other, we do tricks and that gets us points," I explained. 30 seconds later, "can you at least punch?" he asked? "YOU CAN'T PUNCH, YOU CAN'T KICK, YOU CAN'T FIGHT, YOU CAN'T KILL, YOU CAN'T SHOOT, YOU CAN'T CAR JACK, YOU JUST SKATE!"

"This game sucks," he told me.

I always thought cap guns and hot wheels were lame and if I told people who where 30 that in the early 80's they would probably have the same reaction.
Fear your thoughts because they become your words
Fear your words because they become your actions
Fear your actions because they become your habits
Fear your habits because they become your character
Fear your character because it becomes your destiny

Therefore: Thinking and nurturing positive thoughts, at any point in your life, can change your destiny.

    Staged article?

I think I have an issue of EGM- I'm not 100% sure- in which there was a letter criticizing them for leaving out classic games in a list of all-time best. Their reply was nasty, to say the least.

Later in that same issue was an alleged incident in which dad (one of the EGM staff) was showing his kid some old Activision games and patches (awards). I always thought the whole thing looked phony; how many kids speak like that? Naturally, the kid was not impressed- all right, granted- but the replies, they seemed so...unrealistic?

If the staff members get these reactions from their kids, it sounds like they deserve every bit of it. Wierd, wierd people.

Well, dad was trying to impress the kid, who of course was bored...fine...but the kid's reply just seemed so artificial and unrealistic.
