Default How hot was SFII for the SNES?

I guess this one goes out to those who worked at a retail location back in the day.....

How hot was SFII for the SNES when it was first released? EGM had it on their cover about 20 times and it was hyped to no end, or so it seemed. Anyone sell out in the first day or anything like that?

I never worked at a retail shop, but i do remember waiting in line to get the game. There must have been 25 people in front of me, all purchasing SF II.

It was the reason I got a SNES. I'm sure it sold lots of copies.

I was working at Toys R Us at the time and it sold really well... I actually imported the Japanese version and was the coolest guy at the store for a week or two cause I had the code that let you use the same characters in 2 player mode.

It was so hot it was one of 3 games I have ever imported..

The only way you could be asking this question is if:

    a) you weren't born yet
    b) you couldn't read in 1993 and had very controlling parents
    c) you didn't know what "video games" were

It was so astronomically huge that I can barely remember a game that had more hype or anticipation around it PRIOR to that. EGM and every other magazine hyped it and for a change it was WORTH it - I'll never forget picking up my game the day it came out, and mind you I'm not a big SFII fan. The game was simply brilliant for its time, and it's held up very well as I'm sure you know.

Ah yes, all the SF2 hype which I don't think I've ever really recovered from. Talk about overload...

I didn't even know about it until I saw the game in the magazine(never had the money to go to the arcade), and I knew then I needed it. That's how crazy it was.

You know, I have yet to buy a copy of SF2 for any format. Don't know if I'm ever going to, either.

SFII was beyond huge. I was only about 14 at the time but I remember like it was yesterday. I was completely obsessed with that game. I wore out one of my SNES controllers from playing it so much. I even drew pictures of Ryu and Guile, and still have them!

Yeah, same here. I remember sitting for hours at a time playing the 2 player mode by myself just trying to learn how to do the moves with accuracy. God I wish could still be dedicated to a gmae like that.

Longest video game line I've seen outside the PS2 launch. Dozens of factory sealed cases lining the store from front to back with no shortage of buyers.

Yeah, not a fighting game fan, I take it. I wasn't too crazy about them... until I got hooked on Samurai Shodown, and I realized how great the Neo Geo was. I grew up on Street Fighter 2 myself. I remember the hype myself, back when I was a young'un. A bit scary, yes. Street Fighter 2 is still a great game by itself today, but it is a bit dated, and it doesn't really compare to Samurai Shodown 2.

Two days before Japanese release, a good mate of mine at school gets hold of SNES SF2 from a mate of his. He doesn't have a SNES. He knows I do! As we're both huge SF2 freaks at the time, he naturally calls me up in the morning like 5 secs after "borrowing" it and asks me to bring my setup round to his place. I didn't leave until 10pm. We spent almost 12 hours constantly playing the game that day! Our thumbs were dead... our fingers bleeding. It was intense... and something never to be repeated!

Eh. I remember playing SF2 at a friend's house way back when, it seemed much better back then than it does now. That said, the good publicity it brought gaming...oh so good. No blood, too, that's a plus :D

Very Huge, I remember that Nintendo had secured the rights to the first home console version which helped alot with the sales of its console, the Genesis Champion Edition version came later. One of the Greatest Games til this day without a doubt

I have 2 copies of it (to go with 3 super nintendos), I just played it for a couple hours the other day

IGN has it as #10 on their top 100 games of all time (Super Mario Kart is #14)
