Irem Classics PSX

After years of looking for this particular import, I finally landed a copy a few weeks ago. I've now spent many evenings glued to it, and thought I'd file a full report for the benefit of those who might also be trying to track it down. While I was looking for it, I searched the web extensively for any info on the Playstation release of Irem Arcade Classics, and never turned up anything useful - no screen shots, no box art, nada - just a so-so review or two and the usual token listing at cheat code sites. So I vowed that when I got hold of the bloody thing, I'd correct that omission right away. And here ya go.

I have Irem Classics as well but think much much less of it. I think what put me off in the first place is the fact that so little of the CD is used. No extras, just emulated titles of games that in themselves amount to less than 1mb. Also, I was never crazy about 10 Yard Fight or Zippy Race... leaving only Spartan X (Kung Fu Master) for me to appreciate. It always seemed like a very weak effort.

Incidentally, we have these games reviewed on our site as well, in that section that hasn't been overhauled yet. Just another opinion, these reviews are always subjective! I'm glad I have the game for collecting purposes but it's not something I see myself playing ever again...

y'know... i passed up that one a few years ago when it was offered to me, and i've been kicking myself ever since, lol. thanks for the review!

p.s. there are a few very early psx import games from 1994 that don't use the save feature or force you to reset the system or enter cumbersome passwords- leads me to believe sony was rushing to get the system out, or some developers who were doing "simple" stuff like the irem game didn't feel a save was necessary. after all, you can't save/quit in the arcade, so why do it at home? sounds like a logical decision (especially if you look at it from the p.o.v. of the programmers)... :wink:

You gotta admit though, it's a better deal than the individual disc that they offering now. I mean Crazy Climber is fun, but I can't justify paying $22 for a PSX disc with JUST Crazy Climber on it.

Yeah, whether or not you really grok this one is directly proportionate to your enjoyment of those games in the arcade. I was always a mongrel for Motorace, so I made it a bit of a mission to find this disc. I'm glad that I did finally get my hands on it though.

tell me about it! that game needs analog stick support badly! i had to dig out my interact barracuda pad for this (the one with the two sticks and a button that makes any psx game analog), and i still didn't finish it!...

Great find. I had to resort to less than desirable means to procure my copy of that Irem compilation. Love the "Retro-Revival Reviews too.

By the way, have you guys seen/tried Space Chaser or Crazy Balloon 2000 for the psx? I also think there's a Qix 2000.. although that's one I'm personally missing... They have the original arcade game (which Mame STILL doesn't emulate correctly (no sound) and an enhanced version on them as well. Pretty cool.. but probably only if you played the originals back in the day (and even then, they weren't all that) :P But I think they'd be great for a review.

yeah, qix 2000 is excellent! the re-mix game is lousy (well, the anime gal portraits you uncover are quite poor, lol), but the arcade PERFECT original game is what made me grab it when i saw it. i'll see if i can track a few more down over the next couple of weeks.

the superlite series is FULL of great classics and stuff that would have done pretty well here, in terms of budget titles, i think..=^P
