I don't think you need to look at an official explanation. Having it look like a BJ was obviously unintentional. I'm sure that the programmer(s) realized what it looked like after the game was released and had a good laugh. It's just like all of the classic 'Engrish' from that era: unintentional, but funny.

I don't think Nintendo would purposly make that. The only reason I can imagine it beign on purpose is if teh Programmer was beign fired and just altered the graphics which I doubt.
