Default Random Game O' the Day: San Francisco Rush 2049

The Futuristically Conscious DP Random Game Generator (tm) has chosen the cross-platform arcade port "San Francisco Rush 2049".

What a sequel. My favorite version is the Dreamcast port, with the rumble steering wheel I enjoyed it even more than the arcade version.

What did you think of the game? Post your mini-review here.

    DP Guide sez:

San Francisco Rush 2049 (Dreamcast, by Midway) $12/R2
Based on the 1999 Atari Games coin-op. Racing/Street Racing. Released 09/06/00.

San Francisco Rush 2049 (Game Boy Color, by Midway) $0/R0
Based on the 1999 Atari Games coin-op.

San Francisco Rush 2049 (N64, by Midway) $24/R4
Based on the 1999 Atari Games coin-op. Gray cart. Rated E. Supports the N64 Expansion Pak. Released 09/06/00. #NUS-NRUE-USA.

The DC version of SFR 2049 is one of those rare racing titles that's for EVERYONE! Not only does it have the excellent stunt mode that's INCREDIBLY fun, but you can earn points to unlock stuff by winning races as well as doing enough tricks! I was REALLY impressed by this title...most modern racing games really put me off, but SFR 2049 was easily accessible....tight controls, solid framerates, great tracks, there's really nothing at all bad about it! I did get a little frustrated at first when I found out you need points before you can ever win at the first races (since you can't get ar upgrades right away) but then I found stunt mode

All in all, one of THE best racing games I've EVER played!

I really enjoyed the N64 version, but I traded it away with the intent to get the Dreamcast version later. I still haven't got it.

Is that screenshot from the Dreamcast version?

Yes it is, courtesy of the recent batch of screen shot contributors (see "Collecting" Forum). Here are a few more:

I managed to get lucky and score this game and a Dreamcast hardware lot for $20 on eBay, and is by far one of the best $20 I have spent in a long time.

The addition of the wings was a great idea, and it makes the stunt arena so much fun (although it is a pain in the ass to get all of the tokens....)

All of the shortcuts and sidetracks are also quite fun. Often, I just explore the in depth levels rather than racing in them!

only played the N64 version and I loved it (but it was too expensive)
I already have rush "1" for N64 but 2049 is much better
ohh and graphics are awesome for a N64 game imo

As a rule I don't really care for racing games at all, but this is a great Dreamcast title. Lots of fun.

I rave about this game so much, I'm kinda sick of talking about it. So, basically, I think its the best Racing game ever. Thats all I have to say about that.

I like the price on the GBC version. Is it that bad? ;-)

i used to play at the super-walmart at 2-3 in the morning. no little kids whining, no gawking onlookers, and replays were half off. 5 dollars lasted me at least an hour. at the arcade, 5 bucks won't last me more than 20 minutes. yep, high school... memories.

SFR2049 is the best outing of one my favourite racing series.

I played the N64 version back in the day, and then proceeded to pick up the far superior DC version.

    Fantastic stuff!

Heh.. I was looking at the first pic and I thought 'spooky.. that looks familiar'... now I know why. Rush 2049 is one of my favourite DC titles - it gets brutally hard but in multiplayer, it's the business.

Slightly off-topic ...I treated myself to a half-decent video card as I was having trouble capturing the PAL-I output of the CD32 for some reason. £70 for the card and £20 to replace the CD32.. this is proving expensive so far! Still.. I'm looking forward to providing more screenshots.
