    Default Mario Kart......Online? WTF?

I'm starting to wonder here. I just got done spending roughly $100 so I could play the new Mario Kart.....and online I might add. So i finally get a chance to hook everything up. Run a cat5 cable all the way to my gaming area(50+ ft). Start up Mario Kart, go to LAN play, thinking.....WTF...that's not hardly right. so I tell it to setup and all that other BS. and it's looking for other gamecubes? So I read through the manual and it only plays with gamecubes on your LAN? How lame is that? I don't have many friends interested in gamecube and even less are interested in shelling out the money for a broadband adapter. Why on earth doesn't this thing play online? I want to play the masters from Japan man! Come On!

So is this in the future or did i get shat on? Somebody tell me online gaming for GCN is in the works or else I think Nintendo is a done deal for me, I just might be sick of trying to like them again.

I play Mario Kart 64 online all the time. Smooth as hell too as long as I'm playing with people with decent pings. w00t 4p Battle Mode trash talking.

    http://www.warppipe.com/

crispy, thanks for the info. I've been there and while it looks useful.....I don't like the idea of trying to find somebody to play online with. If that makes any sense, I think i should just be able to hook up to the web and connect to a server and find other Mario Kart players and thus it goes from there....but that's not looking to be. So I guess the final question is, is this in the works for Nintendo? Or will i be stuck using third party software on my pc to get it going, or the obvious LAN party..

Mario Kart Double Dash has never been advertised as being online. It simply is not an online game. You can't just hook up to the web and connect to a server. There is only LAN play.

If you want to play online, you have to use WarpPipe. This program will trick your GameCube into thinking that other GameCubes on the net are actually in your LAN. Just like XBConnect if you've ever used it.

Check out the back of the game before you buy it. It tells you all you need to know:

LAN Compatible, # of players, memory card, etc etc

Nintendo needs to drop the whole "Broadband Adapter" name. Broadband is the current industry boner-word, and it implies an internet connection. But Ethernet is a baseband media, and has nothing to do with the internet in and of itself. I have a feeling that Nintendo's customer support has fielded a number of calls on this issue with Mario Kart.

Well, didn't it originall come out for PSO anyway? In that case, it WAS for internet connectivity.

Right. But that doesn't make the Gamecube the Luigi's Mansion Cube. ;-)
