Default Super Smash Bros. & SSB Melee - 2D or 3D?

That is the question. Personally, I class them as 2D (or 2.5 D) - regardless of the engine used to create them - because the action takes place primarily on one plain, at least from what I remember.

What do you think? Should these two games be considered 2D or 3D?

2.5D, no question. The only thing 3D about the gameplay is the credits shooting game in SSBM.

    I'd classify them as 2.5D.

2D. No an integral parl of the gameplay moves into the third dimension. Up and Down, Left and Right. It just looks like it's got depth due to some clever level design/construction.

No 2.5D because the characters do not move toward or away from the screen on the z-axis. Camera zooming does not count.
RIP bargora, you will be greatly missed. That is how we do things on Giedion Prime.

Ah, I was using "2.5D" in reference to how the game has 3D graphics but 2D gameplay. Like Strider 2 or Mars Matrix.

The only 3D aspect of SSBM I can think of is the stage with the X-shaped ship that flies "toward" the camera. As it goes through the tunnel, you can jump onto some little platforms. Then of course there are the cars in the F-Zero stage that come from the rear.

It would be 2-D, I think. It's just like Contra: Shattered Soldier. The action does take place in several different planes on the Mute City stage of SSBM, but that's only because this big platform drops you off at another section of the track. The action is all 2-D, except for the credits in SSBM as Yashiro noted. Pressing "up" on the control pad always makes you jump. I guess that would be one trait that qualifies it as a 2-D fighter... but it's not a fighter in the true sense of the word! :P

Oh, and I love both games. If you could only get one, though, elect for Melee. But if you just have an N64, then you could start with just SSB.
That's it! Next stop: The Junkyard. Population: You!

Fun fact about Super Smash Bros. Melee: it's the best-selling GameCube game, at 1,772,669 copies as of October '03. Half a million more than The Wind Waker! 800,000 more than Metroid Prime! Insanity.
