Default Genesis .. here is why

The Genesis / MegaDrive is FAR superior to the SNES / Super Famicom. Let's compare the specs.

MegaDrive: CPU is MC68000. Very efficient chip, running at a blazing 7.6 MHz. On a full 16-bit bus, so there is no bottleneck.

SFC: CPU is a cheap 65c816 chip, so bad you'd find it for sale at Radio Shack in the spare parts department.. @ approx. 2.6 and 3.5 MHz speeds .. on 8-bit bus, making data transfer painfully slow.

MegaDrive: ROM access can occur while the machine is working due to DMA (Direct memory access). ROM can be copied into RAM WITHOUT consulting the CPU, leaving it to keep procesing game data instead.

SFC: ROM access can only occur when the CPU is not busy, causing lag. ROM reads are also abysmally slow due to the fact that all data MUST pass from ROM to the CPU (on a crippled bus), THEN to the memory. And it must wait until the CPU is finished with any processing it is doing.

MegaDrive: 512 Color palette, Great for normal games, but looks terrible in the Sega CD video clips. But, the SFC never had a CD component (officially released, anyway.)

SFC: approx. 32,000 color palette, far superior .. but not really necessary, as sprite based games don't NEED such a wide range of colors .. The SFC does technically have the lead here, though.

MegaDrive: High-speed Zilog Z80 CPU @ 4 MHz handles sound. That's right, 4 MHz, exceeding the max speed of the MAIN CPU of the SFC. And this is just for sound processing. Add to this a high quality yamaha YM2612 chip, and you get awesome sound quality. The Z80 allows for quicker processing of sound data without burdening the main CPU, for more rapid and complex music and audio sampling.

SFC: Cheap sound hardware. The music did sound decent, but it had nowhere near the clarity of the MD's. Also, due to slow sound processing, music could not be terribly complex, so generally you'd just hear a main melody, no background elements to the music in most cases.

MegaDrive: Backward-compatible with Sega's previous machine, the Sega Master System. All that needed to be done was to initiate a software switch or pull a pin high or low on the cartridge slot (and rearrange the data/address lines), to play SMS titles. This is why the power base works so well .. all it needs to do is swap a few leads around.

SFC: The CPU is backward compatible with the NES .. as though Nintendo originally intended to make this machine able to run original NES/Famicom titles. Then they seem to have just abandoned that idea by using sound and video hardware 100% INcompatible with the NES/Famicom software library. Yet, even with all the more advanced parts they added, they kept the abysmal CPU. Cost cutting measures, anyone? .. This is why the NES adapters (super 7, I think one is called?) for this machine have the vital parts of a NES built into them for compatibility. It's just a NES in a cartridge.

I'd call this an open-and-shut case.

Default Don't get me wrong ..

Don't get me wrong though. I do love some SNES games. Not a lot, but a few of them are great. I like Mario World, All Stars, Raiden (though it doesn't live up to the arcade version), Mortal Kombat 3, and to an extent, Starfox. There are just so many more games I enjoy for the MD, plus these games are faster and more engaging due to the superior hardware, which I also favor due to its design and selection of parts.

Then I'm not the only one who noticed that.

Seems the forum software hiccupped. Looking at the code, it seems Zubiac666's "clearly SNES" post is written twice in the code, but only appears once in the thread. Coding is messed up. But it only happens rarely, so it has to be something that's rarely used.

I have seen this happen a few times and only on this forum. I've been trying to find what is causing it by looking at the code of this page. Maybe shed some light on this weird forum-screwing bug...

    I FOUND THE PROBLEM!

In Zubiac666's post above, he accidentally caused the forum software to think a comment was closing prematurely.

    When he wrote:

    -->

The forum wasn't designed to um, how do I explain it? Let's say if the Webmaster were to do one thing. And this one thing will fix this. Just do this one simple thing, and it will be fixed permanently on every page it ever happened on. I just tested it in another thread (That allows editing so I could fix it afterwards) and it worked perfectly. Do this one thing:

Tell the forum software, add a character replacement into their listing for the > character
Make the software change it to >

I'm sure the Webmaster will understand what I mean, if he doesn't, have him email me. But this will fix it! And no longer will someone like Zubiac666 accidentally inadvertently cause the page to mess up.

I had a Genesis longer than an SNES (Genesis 1991 {i think}, SNES 1996) but I'd have to go with SNES. There was only so much I liked for the Gens.

and I've never owned a TG-16, but I will never forget playing the store demo of Air Zonk as a kid
And don't bring up that stupid girlie Aladdin rip off! Shantea?

    I really can't say...like em all.

Most playable system, though, is the SNES, with its nicely done Mode 7 graphics. Since that's the system with Super Metroid, Super CV 4, and lots of other classics, I'd have to choose it.

Not voting though -- the PC-Engine isn't quite complete unless you consider the CD-ROM system for it, that right there makes it worthwhile! Not to mention the port of Street Fighter 2 is the best.

It's hard to pick one, but I would say Genesis for these reasons...

-I liked the controller better(6-button version)
    -Sonic series
    -Streets of Rage series
    -Columns(sp?)
    -Phantasy Star series
-Sports games just seemed better on the Genesis IMO
-The Sega CD with Sonic CD
-The 32X with Virtua Fighter(it's not so great now, but I used to like it a lot)

Genesis does what Nintendon't and I didn't have a TG-16 back in the day so Genesis hands down.

    Sonic
    Shinobi
    Phantasy Star
    Toe Jam and Earl
    Strider
    Tecmo Super Bowl
    Ect....

On a side note I have recently gotten a TG-16 and love it. I also love the SNES but the bottom line is the Genesis

Genesis all the way! I judge a system by software. Genesis had some of the best. SNES and TG16 were great as well. THey just didnt do it for me like the Genny did. SHinobi 3!

I'm sorry but I just love them all

Really 16-bit video gaming really has to be the best!!!

My top three systems are the

    Genesis
    SNES
    TG-16

so this topic is really hard for me but I'll stick with what I already went with the Genesis

    All 3 win IMO

As much as I love the Genny, I have to give the nod to the SNES.

    Games like -

    Zelda: Link to the Past
    Super Metroid
    Super CastleVania IV
Mortal Kombat 2 & 3 (better versions IMO than the Genny had)
    Killer Instinct
    Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo
    Final Fantasy 3/6

... and many more make the SNES one of my all time favorite consoles.

The Genesis was the 16 bit system with best games.

EGM was very biased towards Nintendo in the early 90`s, and that made me defend my beloved genesis even more!!!

    I'll take snes any day.
Genesis just doesnt have the magic. The snes has a certain quality, hard to describe, part of it's in the music and sfx, part of it's in the incredibly superior controller......
I'll put Snes first, TG16 second, and genesis 3rd.If there were no snes, i think tg16 could've kicked the living crap out of genesis. IMO, genesis is a pathetic pile of garbage. Yes, i have one, but only for games i can't get on any other system, and if it werent for sega cd and 32x, i wouldnt have many genesis-series games at all....

I had to pick the TG-16.

It had CD support first and the Hu-Cards could be played in the Turbo Express (if you could afford one). I know the SNES had the Super Gameboy adapter but that is playing the portable on the home system not the home system game on the portable.
