Default PS2 Vertical Issues - let's settle this

Okay, I went back and read all the past threads, and I can't find a definitive answer. I've searched the web and can't come up with a definitive answer. This board is home to some of the foremost video game experts outside of (and inside of) the industry. Let's see if we can't figure out a FINITE answer to this question.

Does it, or does it NOT, harm your PS2 to play it sitting vertical? I'm running out of room here, and being able to set it vertical would be extremely useful. What's the verdict?

It doesn't hurt your system.. The Revision 1 PS2 died in both the vertical and horizontal.. I had my V7 PS2 Vertical for a year until I rearanged my gaming area.

Thats the model number. You have a US launch system.

I noticed that about after a year, the tray started to sag. Nothing terribly bad, but enough to make an uneasy grinding noise.

yes, I took very good care of my PS2. I never knocked it over, and moved it across the room only once.

Common sense tells me that the center of gravity would be alot more strainious on such mechanic parts in a vertical position than in a horizontal position.

    That's just my opinion though.

I think every one of these threads devolves into 'Tastes Great!' and 'Less Filling' eventually. Ferchrissakes, this isn't hardened military hardware, it's a playstation: some die, some dont. It's spatial orientation probably has very little to do with it.

SF - Vertical and never had issue 1.

Yeah, it really is more of how you treat your machine than which position it's in (that sounds SOOOOOOO naughty). Anyway, I have a Rev 1 launch PS2 and it's been vertical since day 1.

The problem with them is that they suck in too much dust. If you have it in a well ventilated cubby, it won't matter what way you set it. Overall, you're more likely to end up with MORE dust on the boards inside over time if it's horizontal, but if it's kept relatively protected (in a nook in your entertainment center for example) it should be fine either way.

Basically, it's the fragility of your hardware that's the problem, not the axis of orientation. Too much dust, off balance discs, too many jarring blows....all will kill it dead.

I am willing to bet that if you built a PS2 out of the best parts money could buy, and ran a disc non-stop, that the one standing vertical would shit the bed way before the horizontal.
I don't care what anyone says- I don't believe that this machine is built to be played on it's side.
I just dont think that a compact disc's rotation would be the same that way, and I would believe there would have to be more errors from a sideways cd tray.
the fact that many ps2's die standing up vertically and horizontally just shows what a cheaply made piece of crap it is.

My last year in college people were turning their PSX's on thier sides becasue it was the only way they could get their Version 1 PSX's to work.

So some systems actually work ONLY when verticle (or just upside down. )

Has anyone had the tray stop working? It seems like it would be the first thing to give out.

    Tastes Great!

Oh, and I have mine vertical with no problems. You're NOT going to get a definite answer. The hardware is poorly built (and I'm a sony fanboy) so, some fail, some don't.
It doesn't matter what position you put her in, she's still gonna complain, but as long as it works for you, screw her.

Standing it vertically is also a nice fix for DREs. I have not had 1 since I heard it on the web and stood it up vertically. Same goes for my old model 1 Sega CD, it won't boot up unless it's vertical.

I have seen trays stop working, but as long as you dont care about the way that your system looks, just take off the front of the tray and pull it in and out when you need to replace the game.

I have had my PS2 for almost 2 years now, it was bought new last christmas - it's been in both positions for extended amounts of time and it still works fine (currently vertical).

Late in college I had to eventually have my PS1 flipped upside down in order for games to work since the lazer eye came loose and flipping it would make it rest straight in the circuit board.

on a side note: its really hard to do work at the office when the entire place smells like bacon, egg n cheese!!!

Iíll give ya the straight answer.

When i'm drunk i noticed that it's easier to get a disc in and out horizontally. Vertically i seem to rub the disc(causing scratches) on the tray looking for the err um hole.
My life and perception has changed, but my principals are the same.

I have noticed that if it's not completely vertical that it puts a nice ring scratch on the disc. Every time I see one come in from a customer I ask if their PS2 is vertical and they usually say yes.

I can sit here an argue about this all day but I won't..I have repaired Ps2's and own 4 of them..
I have seen this happen numerous times..
I've read many topics/talks/articles etc about this..I even have spoken to tech within Sony about it.
((I posted a bunch of stuff with more proof in an old thread.)

You have more of a "chance" with it messing up a disc in it's vertical position then when it's in a horizontal position..

One reason is dust builds up on the magnetic wheel that holds the disc in place....
For some reason when this happens and the machine is in a vertical position you'll get scratches on the discs..

It happens less when it's in a horizontal..or not at all.

The main problem is dust ..dust on the wheel..(not dust in the wind )

It mainly happens to the blue bottom disc for they are harder for the wheel to hold on to....
Some discs have to spin faster then others(info in folder/lazy to go find it)so with dust on the magnetic wheel some discs come off faster then others.

I have send several units back to Sony for a free repair..
They all came back fully working with upgrade parts etc..A new warranty and list of new parts installed/Driver/Door etc..
That wasn't even the problem and they changed that stuff...Sweeeet!

I don't have any problem with any of my Ps2's nor anyone who I've repaired systems for or sent for repair..

I never play my Ps2's in the vertical..but I store them that way..

I won't argue about this..I've been through it too much..
