Default The first home video game system with stereo sound was....?

    TurboGrafx-16?

Was there a system before the Turbo that had true stereo sound? I know that the NES didn't. Did the Master System have stereo sound?

By the way, when was the Master System released in Japan? I know that the Turbo hit in 0ct. of 1987. That was the first system, that I know of, that has stereo sound, but maybe the Master System did?

The SMS is mono. I believe the TurboGrafx-16 was the first stereo console. The Sega Genesis is also stereo but came out 3-4 months later.

The first stereo videogames were (again, I believe) Dragon's Lair (which used stereo sound) and Spy Hunter (which wasn't really in stereo, but had one speaker for the music and the other for the sound effects).

There are several computers which were stereo and predated the TG-16, including the Atari ST, the Amiga, and others.

I think, if you don't count computers, the TG has it.

So what was the first S-video system. I know it works with the SNES, but was the cable available back in the day?

    Please don't say the Vis.

We are talking "true" stereo sound, not just "sound coming out of two speakers", right? There was a game pad you could get for the NES that had a head phone jack that pumped "stereo" into your headphones. Then of course there is Game Boy (if you count hand helds) but that came out later.

In the early 80's there were add ons to computers that allowed for true stereo sound. The CoCo was one of them: just snap in a cartridge and those programs that were coded to use it, well, USED it. I'm sure the C64 and probably Apple had such things as well.

Oh! Just a thought: Did the PC Engine give you stereo right out of the box or did you have to get an add on like the Turbo Booster for the TG-16? If that is true then I don't know if the TG-16 is a viable contender for the "first stereo console". IMO it'd have to have it right out of the box.

C64 was mono sadly, though you can have SIDplay etc running in stereo if you want to

However the C64 did support S-video (as I have it currently running on my TV using that!).
