Default Shin Megami If... PSOne ATLUS!!!

    Comes w/ Spine Complete!
(Character design newly drawn in this playstation ver)

"Shin Megami Tensei, aka Digital Devil story is one of the RPG's in the highly successful Shin Megami Tensei series. This is of course part of a larger franchise which includes games such as Megami Tensei on the NES to Persona on the Playstation. RPG players who play this hail this as one of the hallmark RPG's and it's easy to see why. Sporting many advance features for its time and an extremely excellent story this is one RPG which must be played.
(Character design newly drawn for this playstation ver)
    Gameplay and interface: 10/10

The gameplay revolves around you travelling around from a first person perspective. When you encounter something or enter somewhere you'll automactically engage it. For example, you'll automactically talk to a person, enter the shop or begin combat mode. If you do encounter an opponent you'll have the options of attacking it, using automactic battle mode, talking to it or running away. Talking to it is usually a good idea because if the demon likes you enough you can get it to give you magnetite which is basically demon energy, money, join you, or leave. Of course, sometimes the demon may get angry but that's a risk you'll have to take.

Demons which join you will be able to be summoned by your devil summoning program but require Magnetite to survive in this world. The more powerful the monster, the more magnetite is required to summon and maintain it. Demons however, are unable to level up except by being fused that is combined with other demons. Amazingly for its time, you can choose to fuse up to three demons together. And of course, fusing different demons usually results in different demons. A table tells you what type of demon you'll get if you fuse the demons together. The actual specific potential demon and its stats will be displayed just as you about to fuse. As for yourself and your human companions, you level up as normal by gainin experience. You can equip armour and weapons like in most other RPG's. Most notably, all of you can equip swords and guns and you can choose which kind of weapon to use during battle. Sometimes you'll want to use the gun, other times the sword depending on what you're fighting.

Your computer which holds the summoning program can also do a number of other things such as display the stats of recently encountered demons and show the map. Another thing worth mentioning is moon phases which apparently affect demons' moods. It's certainly a nice touch although the effects aren't too apparent except on a full moon when demons go a little berserk.

Perhaps the only bad thing about the gameplay is that you can not convince dark demons to help you no matter how much you try.

    Storyline: 5/5

The storyline is a unique blend of fantasy and science fiction. First of all you'll sit through a dream sequence which will introduce you to the heroes, then you'll wake up to find a girl has been murdered in the park. Things get more and more serious as the game progress as you get a devil summoning program and demons begin roaming the streets. The story gets more and more complicated as you are faced by both Law and Chaos sides, each trying to dominate each other. There aren't many plot twists but then again, what is in front of you is fantastic as it is. It's definitely provocative and actually makes you think.

    Graphics: 4/5

The graphics here are unfortunately mediocre at best except for a few places such as the various temples. However, the monsters are fairly well detailed for its time and the 3D first person perspective was a bold innovative move by the programmers. As such the use of the graphics must receive a relatively high score because of this.

    Level design: 4.5/5

Most of the places you visit reflect what they would be in real life. For example, the shopping centres have weapon and armour shops crowded together. The actual combat dungeons however, tend to be long and difficult but that's not the real problem. The real problem lies in some of the later dungeons which are filled with traps or are dark which means you have to spend time navigating without sight, listening to where you're going. It's especially annoying because you end up stuck going around in circles and this is compounded by the teleporters located in these dark dungeons. However, it is quite advanced for such an old game so it's hard to fault it. Besides, these dungeons are far into the game so you'll probably suffer through them gladly to advance the story.

Creepy haunting music tends to dominate the scene and fits the abstract fantasy atmosphere very well. No complaints here.

Excellent story, ability to talk to demons instead of just killing, alignments, ability to fuse demons, ability to have demons as part of your party."
