Default Help on some PSX imports

I've seen a few interesting PSX import fighting games but I would like to know which ones do you think are the best and have a small game description if possible (gameplay and modes). The games are:

    Advanced VG
    Shadow Struggle
    Armed Fighter
    Gokuu Densetsu: Magic Beast Warriors
    Shichisei Toushin: Guyferd
    Slam Dragon
    Beast Wars Metal

If you had to pick three, which ones would you choose and why?

I'd vote against Variable Geo. Like the rest of its series, the PlayStation version is a mediocre fighter in which waitresses battle it out, with the loser being forced to strip naked. It's dull and insulting.

If you're looking for obscure PSX import fighters, I'd suggest Lightning Legend. Though visually a 3-D fighter, it plays a lot like a 2-D one, with goofy characters and a fun item-collecting feature. Not great, but worth grabbing for ten or fifteen bucks.

shadow struggle is pretty cool- it has an arena battle mode where you can buy moves and use them in fights. not the prettiest game, but i had a good deal of fun with it.

gokuu densetsu: magic beast warriors?! wow! i haven't seen that one i a few years! if you like digitized fighters based on the monkey king legend, it's the best (and if you don't, hell, PM me and i'll buy or trade ya for it!)

slam dragon... REPLAYED this one this weekend, just to be sure...it's actually not TOO bad, kinda fun in a way. the rendered fighters look like action figures, and the fighting isn't the speediest, but it's sorta fluid. if it's cheap, go for it! MUCH better than battlemaster (one of the worst fighting games for the system)

i actually sorta liked advanced vg, but it's really geared toward guys who play games one handed, what with the scanty costumes and dopey story...

beast wars metal...(shudder)... if you're a tranmsformers NUT, buy it. if not, save your money for porn or rice...

guyferd? i didn't know there was a fighter. i know of a sorta dull cinematic adventure game, so it's your call.

recommendations (if you don't have these already): tobal 2, abalaburn (also an action/RPG), critical blow, heaven's gate, lightning legend (i thought i was the only other person who liked this one, lol), and blue breaker burst or lord of fist (if you want a RPG to go with your fighting game)...

So Blue Breaker's half-RPG, half-fighter? How does that work? I've thought about trying the game out, since it usually goes for less than ten bucks on eBay.

damn good price for a really fun game! bbb has a story mode, where you travel a 2D world map and do the town thing, and the fights are 3D sorta like soul edge/sangokumusou. lots of anime sequences and a decent fighting engine (you can also do the usual arcade and vs. modes as well) albalaburn is also a RPF- i just replayed a bit over the weekend just to make sure...

Except the PSX version is completely censored. That aspect of VG was removed from the console games. I wouldn't say the VG series is totally mediocre. Most of the games are either primitive or clunky but there are two standouts. Advanced VG2 (PSX) and VG Max (PC) are pretty good fighters in there own right. Not to mention Advanced VG (PSX/Saturn) plays better than Pretty Fighter series.

As for Advanced VG. They did improve on it considerbly considering it was adapted from the primitive PC VG 1/2 games and once again improved within its own name, Advanced VG was also out on PC Engine CD. It uses a four button system, 2 punch & 2 kick buttons, and has the added desperation move. The game is rather average at best, with limited number of moves. There is an option to change gameplay speed added but never messed with that. Music is pretty nice. Characters have a life to them, unlike so many other fighting games where characters feel empty, just a design churned out.

There are nine basic characters and two basic modes, not counting the versus options. 1 player mode allows you to play through as any nine basic characters to get their PC game endings, depending on difficulty settings you can get one of two different ones. There is no real boss here save for Reimi, for obvious reasons to anyone who knows about VG1/2.
Story Mode, the best part of the game, is where TGL shows how to do a story mode in a fighting game right. It is based on the main heroine, Yuka, and plays out like an anime story. Light fluff in the first half of the story, with bits of darkness hinted at, and the last half where the dark stuff comes into play. This mode also presents two console only VG characters as bosses, K-1 and K-2, part of the Miranda's Hybrid project. The game ends on an unresolved note, which is resolved in Advanced VG 2.

Super VG is a different from Advanced VG. Of course PCE AVG had a different engine and backgrounds from PSX/SS AVG but it kept the AVG story.
SVG has different backgrounds as well but one main difference of SVG is that it has no story mode, so it really isn't anything that falls into any VG universe continuum. That 1P portion of the AVG game, which SVG retains, is a compilation, of sorts, of game endings found on previous VG games.
Second difference is the game engine itself. The characters move faster but are at the same time shrunk down in size and some moves have been somewhat changed or tweaked in some way, such as Jun's Earthskaker, Manami's cat rocket punch.

...nail on head time. the lack of a story mode is what makes super v.g. more appealing to me than the "advanced" v.g. games i've played. i don't care about plot in my fighting games, and i care less about the goofy waitress/fighter angle (but some folks love that stuff). as long as the art and animation are solid and the moves come off the pad without a hitch, i'm there, lol.

Art on Super VG is debateable, animation to some degree. Ayako is at her worst here in both counts. As for moves, now we're getting to the actual game, Super VG is still just as simplistic as Advanced VG. The play only has a different feel. Lack of story mode simply makes Super VG stand out as another above mediocre fighter. Story mode won't save any fighting game that has one, look at Criticom or Black Hole Assault, in which case neither aspect were of any good. But Advanced VG it gets points for it because it was done right, giving the actual game an added support. But if you want the best gameplay then Advanced VG 2 is the best any console VG game has to offer. Though if you Super VG is what you enjoy best of the series then I can relate. I prefer playing SNES Castlevaniaracula X over PCE Dracula X:Rondo of Blood for a similar reason.
