It works fine with a playstation joystick. But when I tried using my playstation trackball it wouldn't work. Does anyone know why this is or if it's even supported. I don't have a playstation so I have no idea if it really works.

OK, I'll take a shot at this one.
The USB adapter (and I'm assuming you installed software) is used to "translate" (for lack of a better word) a Playstation controller to Windowspeak. Most Playstation controllers have some combination of analog and digital controls (or just digital controls). You can adjust analog and digital joysticks in MAME just dandy, so most joypads or joysticks will work. Most of the time specialized controllers such as flight sticks will work too because they operate on the analog or digital, with the obvious exception being the light gun.
The trak ball won't work because it is a different type of controller that isn't analog or digital; it's a mouse. A mouse controller was available and used in some early Playstation games, and the trak ball is simply an upside-down mouse That's why it only has 2 buttons, right?
