Default Best version of Mortal Kombat II?

The eternal question... or at least that's the way it seemed back in the early 90's. Back then, I bought the SNES version and never looked back. But now, I've looked into other versions of the game to see if maybe there's a better one out there. Mortal Kombat II will always be a Top 10 hit for me. I played this game wherever and whenever I could... many many many hours in the arcades as well as home on the SNES.

So what is the best version? I've been thinkin about looking for the Saturn version because I remember reading years ago that it was arcade perfect. However, I have never actually seen it played, so I can't make any personal judgements. Any thoughts? I'd like to know if it's worth investing in any other version of MKII when I already own the SNES version. Thank you for your time.

The Saturn version is "perfect" if you consider "perfect" to be loading everytime you try and pull of any special moves. It's not terrible, but it completely ruins the flow of the game for a oh-so-breif split second. Avoid the 32X port as well.

The best version is the Arcade version. Next, the Snes version. The saturn version I never wanted because it has to load every time you want to morph using Shang Tsung. I cant deal with that

I'm no expert on MKII, but isn't the 32x version better than the SNES?

    Yep, arcade version

I got mine working, but the sound isn't working, and I have to leave the (new) battery out, so I can't change any of the damn options.

Needless to say, a new board is on da way

Naw, I'll say it too....the Arcade is first, of course, then IMO Genesis, it just seemed to flow alot better and seemed quicker/more responsive, SNES had a bit better look, but seemed *soft*, dunno how to explain it other than that way

    That's easy.. Arcade..

The hard question is which version of the arcade is the best??

3.1/3.2 Final version with few bugs

2.1 with the multiple babality glitch is always fun

Challenger/Immortal with the major increase in difficulty and scrambled tree (can fight Kintaro first or even any of the hiddens)

4.2 with the scrambled tree of Immortal, but not as hard

Or even the 1.1/1.4 pre release versions. No endings, few fatalities, but some interesting glitches in the computer AI.

Dang, guess it's time to drag that board out and install it for a while!!

I have the 3.1 and the Challenger boards. Challenger is cool with the unlimited fatality time, but playing against the computer sucks.

You know anywhere I can get the 2.1 board?

You'd think it would be, but it's not. Acclaim/Probe promised an "arcade perfect" port, but that wasn't the case.

The game CHARACTERS look and animate just like the arcade, and appear to be the same size. The 32x is used for the character models.

Unfortunately, the backgrounds look washed-out because the Genesis is handling the background graphics.

The 32x sound is inferior to the SNES as well. Even though the 32x added a few extra sound channels to the Genesis it still doesn't compare to the Sony sound chip in the SNES.

Not that I'm trying to bash the 32x... I'd like to see the SNES pull off Virtua Fighter.

Agreed! As long as I don't start off with Noob too early, I can usually do ok. For some reason he just tears me up every time!

Are you comfortable changing out the 2 program roms? I can just burn you a set of them.

Looks shmooks. Which one plays the best?

I'd guess either SNES or 32X.

I'd say the SNES version, but it's the only home version that I've ever owned/played. Still, I've also played the arcade game, and comparing the two, the SNES version comes pretty close. Good thing Nintendo didn't hold back on the blood, but the excessive amount of flying gibs you see from explosive Fatalities has been reduced on the SNES.

So the general concensus seems to be that the SNES version is the best port? Hmm, that's somewhat disappointing. I would have hoped there would have been a much better one out there.

Can't remember, but it was an early rev. wher Subzero had the worst "piss people off" glitch, If I remember right it was F,F+HK and he would produce an unstoppable freeze that you can rapid fire over and over.....many sad ,sad faces at the arcade when that one was found. It was unblockable and multi-castable

As I recall that FF+Hk was the start of his uppercut fatality followed by F, F, D, F HP to do the uppercut. The F,F+HK could be done all day if your hands could take it
