@Kess: Well, I've only been playing the game for 2 months....
And what version of 3rd Mix? The import PSX version? If you're talking about the arcade Korean version, then I'm truly impressed. All those Korean pop songs...that's a lot of tokens. ^_^
No, its the import PSX version.. -.-
But I have beaten 1/2 of the basic Korean 3rd mix songs. ;D

Question: is it worth my while to get the home version? I weight like 220, will I just tear up the pad?
I, Garland, shall knock you all down!
No, the pad is sturdy enough to support your weight. However, I do suggest to not use the game late at night if there's a floor below you (I live in a basement, so that isn't a concern for me, but I can see how it would be if I did live in a second or third-floor apartment).
I weigh around 250 as well. An arcade about 25 min from here has a 3rd Mix machine, and that's the only place I get to play. I'm planning on buying then modding a pad or two very soon. I also hear it'll help you lose weight if you play regularly, and I could stand to shed a few pounds. I know I get a workout when I got to the arcade!
So...anyone have suggestions on what type of pads to buy or where to get them? Please keep in mind that I'm a college student on a budget, and probably cant afford hard pads.
I have a cheap $25 Cdn soft pad and it works fine (no prob. weight-wise). Anyway, you could always settle for something like that and, when you can afford it, move on to the Red Octane pad.
I have been recommended a few bundled packs, none above $125
I weigh 120 and completely suck! So it goes both ways I guess.
BTW, what does the number of feet (as in 6-footer, 7-footer, etc.) mean?
I have beaten Boom Boom Dollar on 3rd Mix, but I was one step away from failure as well. I'm average, but I do pretty well for somebody who lacks rhythm, rarely leaves the house, doesn't play often, and is rather poor. I'm only 130-140 and somewhere around five and a half feet (estimated in that area, as people shorter than me claim they're a height that I thought I was shorter than), yet I'm husky and I start reeking after a few rounds, and by reeking, I mean as in sweating up a stench, not as in sucking at the game. When I am winded however, I do start falling apart, and once I'm officially tired out, I play something else instead, mainly something that doesn't require much lower body movement.
I'm getting better!
I've been going through lesson mode (which I didn't realise existed before) and doing pretty well. Still can't beat any songs though, but the practice is good for me, and I'm enjoying it!
Yes, lesson mode is a BIG help. It helps you recognize the different patterns Konami uses, and it also teaches you to use both feet (which is something almost no one does at first) ^_^
I brought DDR to a party at a friend's house last night. No one there ever saw it before....now I have about 10 people hooked on it!
I just beat my first five foot song this weekend (i know that's pretty pathetic, but I only play in the arcades, and not very often). I plan to get the home version, but everyone I've shown it to thought it was stupid except for one person, and he'll be heading out of state to go back to college very soon. So, once again, if I want to play in the arcades, I'll have to go by myself, which sucks.
@Kess nice reference
Actually I suck at DDR despite the fact that I can probably dance better than 99% of you out there. I used to take lessons- alot of lessons. I would like to be good at DDR, but I haven't taken the time and I'm not young and Asian enough, like the kids I see ripping it up at arcades.
Not Asian enough? Yes, all Asians are good at DDR. And the Chinese can fly. ~_^
Dance lessons probably help quite a bit with rhythm, but not much else when it comes to DDR. DDR isn't quite "dancing"...it's more "stepping". The name for the all-maniac mode in 3rd Mix is more accurate...Step Step Revolution.
@Wisesalesman: Congrats! What song was it? My first 5-footer was Dynamite Rave, if I remember correctly.
Been playing DDR for about a year now. Can pass most 7-footer songs on Heavy difficulty with no problem. Anything higher than that though, I start having problems. Might have something to do with my height...I'm 6'8" and can't move my feet like those short, ungodly players that can get AAA's on every 10-footer song without looking.
Height may have something to do with it. It's probably harder for you to keep balance.Originally Posted by norkusa

I used to be pretty good, but I had to stop playing due to school and my knees... I've been meaning to get back into it, though.
I've beaten everything on singles and doubles that's playable in the arcade through Extreme except for Paranoia Survivor Max Oni on doubles. I've also been playing for close to 8 years now XD
Eventually DDR just lost it's massive appeal to me (and I'm not a fan of In The Groove) so I started playing alot more beatmania and pop'n music, I'm also the lead webmaster/owner of www.bemanistyle.com if that counts for anything.
