    Default Video Game Urban Legends

Gaming Urban Legends.. anyone have any they remember from the days when they were a guillable yougin?
Thought of this when I was playing paperboy for NES tonight.
I used to believe that if you passed from Monday till Friday without missing a single house you ended on saturday with the day off, and were sitting at home watching TV in the basement.... and a robber breaks in and you get a shotgun and have to kill him.
Thinking about it, I don't know why the hell I actually believed something like that. But it was like common fact in my neck of the woods... and I remember multiple people claiming they could get it to happen and many more trying.

    Anyone else have similar experiences?

There isn't a better gaming urban legend than Polybius (http://www.snopes.com/inboxer/hoaxes/roundup.asp).

. Dude, you need to read an article in Next Generation. It was a huge article back in '97 (I believe), and it dealt solely with urban legends in video games.

Anyways, there's the story of E.T. 2600 carts being hauled to the desert. That's a good one. There's also the urban legend about one of the woman fighters in Killer Instinct 64. For a taunt, she pulls back her shirt and faces her opponent, bearing all. The player, of course, only sees the back of her. Now, there's a stage with a mirror, and (so I've heard) if you manage to end the fight when she's standing in front of the mirror, Tit City, baby!

... Well, I've never even played the crappy game, personally. Who knows? Maybe the urban legend is actually true.

That's too much, Ralph! A shotgun? All I can say is that would be awesome.

The only urban legend that I remember is... ???

I called Nintendo's 800 number (remember how you could just talk to them about games?) and told them that I was playing Super Mario Bros. and the Turtle jumped out of the screen and bit me in the dick. (maybe that would qualify as an urban legend that you wouldn't want to happen?)

Then again, I called up Snapple from work and told them that I swallowed a syringe that was in one of their drinks.

I was always taught (and believed... until I made it there for myself) that there was a Mspacman scene where the two get married. But of course it turns out they just chase and then have a kid.. skipping the marriage But it was something I believed in for a long time :P

Snopes reports that as being true. Is it not?

I dunno about the N64 version of the game, but in the Super NES and arcade versions of Killer Instinct, Orchid has a finishing move where she unzips her shirt and flashes her opponent. His eyes then bug out and then he falls over dead. It's rather humorous.

So yeah, at least in the original game, that's entirely true. I've done it many many times. My brother and I used to laugh at it all the time years ago. Like I said before tho, I can't remember if it's in the N64 version or not.

Howard Scott Warshaw, the programmer of E.T., believes it's an urban legend:

There's another thread on the AtariAge website with a scan of the New York Times article that reported the E.T. landfill, but I can't locate it at the mo'.

With all due respect to HSW, one of the GREATEST men in the industry, I believe the story.

The Snoopes article the first guy linked to has that New York Times article listed as one of their sources, and a check at my local library turned it up. It's quite interesting.

As expensive as destroying a few million carts were, I believe the company still SAVED money by doing that and I strongly suspect the operation was done in high secrecy and the middle of teh night.

Here is the scan of the New York Times article and the further debate that zmweasel referenced:

Personally... I think the article is false. But who knows? :P

I told people there was an Alantis type level you just had to get into the ocean in Super Mario 64.

I've heard many times of the exiastence of a PCE Dracula X huCard. I've heard there are only about 6, and I've seen a pic of one. But I'm pretty darn sure it's all a hoax.

back when mortal kombat II first came out in the arcades, there was a rumor around here (R.I) of a nudeality for sonya blade. most of us being young teenagers at the time, believed it and tried relentlessly to figure out how to do it. Does this legend sound familiar to anyone, or was it just around here?

I remember playing Track and Field, and if you did the javelin and threw it straight up you could stick a bird and it would come down. I remember all sorts of rumors, like you could hit a chandelier, UFO, an angel, all kinds of things.

    Sonic and Tails in SSB:M

Also, I heard of a version of Super Smash Brothers exists on the Super Famicon. Is that true?

Yeah, but what about the mirror thing? I'm guessing it's false, but you didn't really speak to it.

I remember when Tomb Raider first came out, all the fanboys were insisting there was a nude code for the game (which i never really blieved, nor cared about). Eventually, some guy made a nude PATCH for the PC version.

I'm still looking for that hidden Chocolate Factory in Super Mario Bros.

    Anyone remember this one?

Are you thinking of Kart Fighter, the HK original for the Famicom?

I don't know, but in SSBM on GCN, when you have a look around your 'room', there is a Super Famicom with cartridge in it.

The cartridge label is the Japanese box-art for SSBM.

I think some people have seen this and gone - "ooooh!!! SSB on teh Super Famicom OMG!!"
