    Default Genesis cartridge questions

OK, I know last week was Genny week, but I just got my Genesis on Saturday.

Why do some cartridges have the yellow clip on them? Why are the cartridges different sizes? Do some of them have batteries in them, and if so, are they changeable? I have a couple of games that save information, and some that appear that they should, but don't... NHL95, NHL96, and NHL97 for example, only 96 saves info, the other two loose the info...

    TIA!

I have always wondered what that yellow clip was for on some Genesis games and I would love to find out.

The yellow clip is on games made by EA and the clips are there to make it very difficult to open the cart without wrecking something. I haven't found a good way of opening them quite yet.

Batteries can be replaced granted that you can remove the PCB from the casing and then pop the spot welds on the battery (preferably without tearing out a post). Securing the new battery is a different story.

The yellow clip is completely cosmetic... I think EA just put them on there to differentiate their cartridges from the rest of the Genesis fare. In fact, since EA originally was releasing unliscensed cartridges, they might have used a different shape to avoid copyright laws, and then just kept on using them afterwards.

There's nothing underneath the clip. I have a copy of James Pond II: Operation Robocod, and the clip is loose and can be pulled off easily (I guess the previous owner probably pried it off out of curiousity, but it's not broken).

These cartridges are annoying too... "normal" Genesis cartridges fit nicely into a casette tape case, but the tall thin EA/Accolade/RazorSoft ones never do.

I agree, the yellow clip cartidges are very annoying. It takes me three or four tries to get Road Rash II in correctly every single time!!

That's another thing that I just remembered! I don't know if it applies to every EA cart but the internal board can fit inside the casing properly when it's flip-flopped. The game won't run (obviously) but it shouldn't wreck anything (at least it didn't for me).

In my experience, standard Genesis boards could only fit into their casings properly one way.

Speaking of Genesis carts, I picked up the unlicensed Fantastic Dizzy a few weeks ago and it won't play. Is this one of the games I need a convertor for?

No need for a converter, your cart probably just needs to be cleaned.
Selling collection, Atari through XBox. Send a PM with whatever games you're looking for.

Thanks. It probably doesn't help that my Genesis 2 and 3 are both dying on me.

Default Go with the Model 1, Model 3 sucks

I have owned two Model 3 versions which died on me. Go with a Model 1, they are the best. I agree with cleaning the carts. All my carts work, just some need some cleaning. My Time Killers cart is a little flaky....not that I play it ever

I picked up my Model 3 when the local Caldors was going out of Business. Something like $20. Lasted about 3 years maybe. Then I picked up a used Model 2 on eBay with some games last summer... that lasted about a week.

The only cartridges that Sega blocked out were the VERY early Electronic Arts games... the only two I can think of off-hand were Zany Golf and Budokan, although I think there are two or three more.
