Best First Person Shooter

I din't find any other post like this, so here goes.

In my humble opinion, I think Halo is the best first person shooter ever made. With breathtaking graphics, amazing sound effects(I love that menu music), and great play control, there is no reason why it shouldn't be. My only beef is that the sniper controls are a little awkward, and that the warthog has bad controls.

My favorite first person shooter of all time is Ghost Recon. The controls are great, the missions and playfields are awesome, and online play is a blast (and free). Plus, it's one of the few newer ones that don't give me a headache in seconds.

i may be the one of the only people that doesn't like halo. i hate all xbox games. i don't like most newgen console gaming to begin with (newgen P.C. Gaming is so-so). anyway, my favorite 3D shooter of all time is Duke Nukem 3D. word...

System Shock 2 is amazing and a long time favorite of mine. I still have to try it again with the High Detail AI Models Mod and the High Resolution Texture Mod.

If I had to cast a vote for best FPS of all time it would go to the original Unreal.
That engine was so beautiful and depite being a little short on story the multiplayer made up for that shortcoming (after it was patched). And those weapons... hells yeah!

Half-Life is a close second altho the Quake engine used in HL just doesn't measure up to the Unreal engine of that era.

Even like Goldeneye, and I never play FPSs. It's strange, though. I've never played any Wolfenstien game, yet my brain automatically files all anonymous, uniformed FPS grunts under "Nazis." If it shoots at me and I'm supposed to shoot at it, it's a Nazi. I have no idea why this is.

That is a bit odd, but I have the same sort of condition, except that instead of "Nazi" they're all under "hippie." Go figure.

I'd say South Park. Not the most technically sound game, but I enjoyed the hell out of it. Any game that has a yellow snowall as a weapon earns top marks in my gradebook.

My favorite FPSs would be the first two Turoks on the 64. South Park as well, since it used the Turok engine. Then Doom and the two Quakes on the 64. Hell, I had the most fun with all of the 64's FPS.

Halo wasn't bad, but IMO was way overrated. Far too repetitious....and that Warthog sucked. Lousy ending to a good game.

I'll have to agree with Halo here. I love alot of FPS's, but Halo is tops for me.

The physics, graphics, sound, and single player campaign are all top notch imo, and immerse you very well. I felt like I was actually on that world fighting aliens "especially on Legendary". Great sense of scope.

Multiplayer though will have to go to Quake 3 Arena with me. Twitch gameplay at its' best. Can you say O\/\//\/t?

People usually look at me with a blank face when I say this, but the only FPS games I've ever gotten into enough to want to go back and play again were the Jumping Flash! games for PSX.

I had a roommate who was a hardcore Quake 3 freak. It was just my luck that I finally bothered to get into the game after he finally burned out.

Can I also give a shout-out to Unreal Tournament? I haven't been able to play the newer versions, because my computer just doesn't have the horsepower. I just really, really dug that game, if only because you could fire six missiles at once. It was the only FPS I could think of that came close to the old-skool thrills of Contra and Gunstar Heroes. And, of course, the level designs were terrific.

And how about Doom? There's still a certain rush that only seems to come from Doom and has never been repeated since. No doubt a lot of that comes from the fact that computers still can't render a room-full of polygon characters without choking horribly. I miss the old days of just being overwhelmed. Gauntlet, anyone?

Finally, I have to give my special Funkadelic shout-out to Rush 2049 on the Dreamcast. Roadblaster deathmatch, four-lpayer chaos, perfectly balanced weapons, arenas that are just the right size, customizable hubcaps (hey, this one's important), crazy killing stunts. Man, I really want my old Dreamcast back.

I don't understand why people love Halo so much. I paid $17 new for it, and thought that it was still way too much. It was very bland to me, and ranks among the poorest FPS ever.

I never played any of they Deus Ex games, but here is my take:

Best story: toss up between Perfect Dark and Red Faction

Best control: Timesplitters 2 (Finally, a FPS that can almost keep up with my thought processes!)

Best side missions: Perfect Dark. Everything from the shooting gallery from the challenges kicked ass.

Best Multiplayer: Perfect Dark or Timesplitters 2. Co-op rules, excellent multiplayer modes.

Best Maps: Goldeneye! I miss playing levels like the Stack, Complex or Temple in the newer games.
