Default Very interesting: "Master Tape" for duplication

Well, I guess I don't have much to say about this.

It makes sense that a company would send the game over on such a durable medium. Has anybody any knowledge of such things?

Also, while the game itself isn't (to me) quite that interesting (since I don't really care for SNK ports to third party hardware, though the DC is an able system), the thought of finding some other Dreamcast games on such tape is fascinating.

That's rather interesting. I would have figured the higher capacity magnetic media would be a lot more prone to corruption. Anyone remember the Iomega Jazz format? 1-2 gigs. They don't support those anymore, people were having too much trouble with them.

    Yes.

By the way, I think the price for this item is extremely generous, given its uniqueness. Can anyone attempt to explain why it's not up for, say, $2000? Or, maybe I'm asking the wrong question. Can anyone attempt to explain why virtually no one would want it at $2000?

I also remember seeing ads for Jazz format, back in '99. Crazy that something like that would have been released.

Well, I'm going to say that unless some crazy collectors get involved, this tape is gonna be worth little more than $200. It is unique, but consider that it's just a port to a third party system, and seems to be the English language version as well.

It's essentially just a glorified ISO image.

I would say the reason it's not higher yet is because one, there's no official documentation that comes with it, and two, unless you have that kind of tape drive, there's no way to tell what's even on it.

I mean, I understand buying stuff just for the sake of collecting, but there's nothing in that auction that really proves to me that that tape isn't just a blank tape someone found in the trash with "Fatal Fury" written on the sticker.

Well, it's the only item he has listed -- I think it's a given that he would've been given this tape, and you have to wonder how Sega of America would've let that out of their hands. The only other auction of his still accessible (via feedback) is for some wierd CD-like thing (I'm not sure what's being sold in that one), but his feedback is alright, which is good, I suppose.

Ah, good points. Well, I think it's pretty cool...

Do the gold versions of discs ever pop up on eBay? That would be something...

To me without more proof it could easily be pirated. But I mean if you have a dc dev system and blank gd roms BUt yeah not worth more than 1-200 if it is legit.

I think that is someone off of the assembler forums. I remeber seeing a thread about it on their forums. They are also trying to get propeller arena released.

Yeah, what are you going to do with it once you have it?

And as others have mentioned, how do you know it's legit?

Finally, there's the fact that you can get cooler stuff, in greater quantities, for less money than $750. As a Neo Geo MVS addict I know said about this, "MotW sucks on the Dreamcast anyways."

We use similiar tapes (although with much higher storage capacity) at work, and it definitely makes sense that they *could* use them for that. My question would be "Why?" they would bother at all though. Those tapes are relatively expensive, and would've been even moreso back then. Plus if a burned DVD didn't make it to Sega intact for some reason, they could just burn and Fedex another one...

Not to mention the fact that if this is some sort of Sega standard, every DC publisher would've needed a tape drive that could read/write to it.
