    Default Saturn 4-in-1

Hi. I'm new to the forums here and I already have a question!

I just rebought a Sega Saturn last night (I foolishly sold my original one a few years ago) and am looking to make it able to play Import games. I don't have the technical know-how or confidence to rip it open and solder it. I have seen a 4-in-1 for sale...is it worth buying? Is there any reason not to get it?

    Thanks for your help!

Is it worth buying? Yes, yes, a thousand times yes! If you have any intention of buying import games, you NEED one of these things. My Pro Action Replay is such an important part of my Saturn that I'm half tempted to weld it into the cartridge slot. It's great not only for playing import games (including those which require additional RAM), but for archiving save files which would otherwise be extremely vulnerable to deletion if left on the Saturn's internal battery. It also lets you enter cheat codes, allowing you to (among many other things) unlock the hidden character Anita in Marvel Super Heroes.

The Saturn just isn't as fun without a Pro Action Replay. Get one today!

It is well worth it. However, keep in mind there are a few imports that use their own propietary Rom cartridges as opposed to the Ram carts. The only ones I can think of at the moment are Ultraman and King of Fighters 95. Those use 1MB Rom carts, and will not work with the 4-in-1. As such, unless you physically mod your Saturn to play imports, you will not be able to play those games since the Rom cart will be sitting in the cart slot, rather than the 4-in-1. For some reason I've also been unable to play X-Men vs Streetfighter using the 4-in-1 rather than the 4MB Ram cart that comes with it. I bought the game some time ago without the Ram and have been unable to get it to work with the 4-in-1. It boots up and goes to the main screen, but when I hit the start button, it resets.

You have to make a slight modification to the cartridge to make it run Capcom's four meg games properly. You open the cart, then scratch out one lead on the circuit board and solder on another one. NCS had instructions on its web site, but I can no longer find them... maybe you'll have some luck looking it up on Google.

Will that affect how the cartridge performs with other games that require RAM?

It didn't affect any of my other games, except Samurai Shodown IV. That one was tougher to load and had slightly garbled graphics.

Also many Ebay'ers call 4-in-1 carts "5-in-1" and many of these carts come DOA.. Poor QOF sold me one years ago and it was dead..
