What's with all these 4:3 aspect ratio resolutions? And can't your average monitor go higher than 1600x1200?

I am bringing this thread back to life instead of making a new one. I'm just interested in finding out what everyone's computer monitors' native and currently set resolutions are these days. As a bonus, we can contrast and compare today's responses to those from 11 years ago.

I'll start: I am currently running at 1440x900, the native resolution of this monitor, which has a 16:10 aspect ratio.

Considering the original thread is 11 years old, widescreen laptop displays were not that common back then. I didn't get a widescreen laptop until my current one, and that was bought in 2010.

I generally run my desktop at my monitor's prime resolution which is 1600x1200, but if I wanted to bleed from my eyes I can push it to 2744x2058@50hz, before my RAMDAC reaches it's specced limit.

I'm not on it at the moment but its I think 1900x1080 but I'm only certain about the smaller figure.

On my main computer, it's good ol' 1600x1200 using a 'vintage' Hitachi SuperScan 21" CRT monstrocity. On my more modern laptop, 1440x900.

I went and looked it up. On my laptop it's 1920x1080, but if I attach an outside screen 3840x2160 according to this site: http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-....126692.0.html

It's time for some upgrades. I've been running 1080p since 2009, and that was with an old GTS 250.

How are you guys running Youtube?

    YouTube doesn't mind 1024x768, if that's what you're suggesting.

By switching my monitor from its usual 1600*1200 to 1280*960 so I can watch fullscreen 720p without scaling. I don't do 1080p Youtube since my internet can't really handle it and Google are jerks about only serving 1080p with MSE. That being said; if I wanted to watch 1080p video, I would simply switch my resolution to 1920*1440 which would result in only minor pixel bleeding.

Heck, it doesn't even mind 640*480.

Doesn't that monitor use a slot mask? If so, I was wondering how that compares to a shadow mask and an aperture grill.

Those setups would drive me crazy.

The only thing I miss about my old 1280 x 800 CRT was playing Dreamcast games in VGA. The VGA box on a 1080p monitor looks like ars.

My top 2 setups are an i5-2500k @4.6 Ghz with an EVGA GTX 670 FTW, connected to a 52" Samsung 1080p LCD with 5.1 surround in the living room, and an i7-4790k @4.6 Ghz with an EVGA GTX 780 Classified connected to a 24" 1080p LCD monitor on my desktop.
