I know I'm on the extreme end here (1800x1440), but the reason I asked was because I have some web dev work and I just wanted to get an idea.

People still use 640x480 and 800x600?

I used 800x600 until last week.

Then I decided to try 1024x768 or whatever it is...

After messing around with the fonts a bit...I've found a really nice balance that is easy to read...while still keeping about 70 icons on my desktop

    You're completely alone here :P

No, really though. On my 15in LCD on my laptop I run 1024 x 768 and I have no problems. I may have bumped the font up just a hair but just a bump at that. I would run it really tiny on my desktop but my mom wouldn't be able to find the start button to log out...

I run 1024 X 768 on my old 15" monitor I got with my old computer back in 1996!

According to my website statistics most people use 1024X768, followed my 800X600, then the larger screen resolutions..

    1152*864

It's just a little bit bigger than 1024*768, and I'm on a 21" monitor, so it looks right to me

1024 x 768. I would have it higher, but my laptop supports only up to this resolution. It doesn't do 640x480 either. 800x600 is the only other option. I wish I could have it higher.

I don't know if Windows lets you do this as easily, but in Linux, it's a fairly simple manner to change the default sizes of text and icons and such... so when you increase the resolution, nothing really gets smaller, it just gets smoother.

One really annoying thing though used to be web pages that would use insanely small fonts, like 9pt or whatever... luckily, most good web browsers (Mozilla and Opera at least) have options to enforce a minimum font size so I can override that nonsense and actually read the webpage.

Am I the only one that finds 1024 x 768 too small for a 17" monitor?
    yes.

1024x768...i got one of those flat panel lcd monitors for christmas the year before last...it is a 15". i told my dad i wanted a monitor for christmas and NOT...DO NOT buy one without asking me. so he did anyways and i'm stuck with this crappy monitor that only supports 1024 (800x600 looks like shit) and won't go any higher. the viewability on this piece is crap. i'm lucky to get a true black on 30% of the screen unless i sit 5 feet away. i'd say it has about a 30 degree angle of viewability from side to side. refresh rate is a mere 75 hz, which isn't crap for a good video card and a good game. oh yeah, and if i put it up at 75 hz, the screen blanks out for a quick second every 5 minutes or so...not a big deal but VERY annoying...so i keep it at 72.

what's even more annoying is that the colors looks waaaaay different on an lcd than a crt. i was into doing some web design for awhile, and i'd go over to a friends house and fire the site up and the colors looked totally different...web designers will understand this is annoying.

    /rant

be wary of lcd monitors my friends, be very wary. if i could do it all over again, i'd buy my own 17" crt for practically half the cost he paid and go for 1280X1024...as i use alot of programs that would benefit from higher resolutions (like music software)

    if i could

Yes. That's what I use on a 15 inch monitor.
