    Default Hooking Up the 32X

I finally got a 32X (Why? Because it was cheap). It appears to be complete in the box with several baggies of parts (never opened). Unfortunetly the only thing that seems to be missing are the instructions, so I have no idea how to hook this thing up. How do you hook the 32X up to the original model Genesis? Keep in mind I also have a Sega CD (the type that sits on the side) hooked up to my Genesis as well.

The 32X sits right on top of the Genesis & slides into the cartridge slot. You'll then unplug the AV from the Genesis & plug it into the 32X. Then take that 2 way AV (hopefully yours came with it) and hook one end into the Genesis & the other end into the 32X's other AV input. Then, hook up the A/C to the 32X & you should be good to go. You'll need to power both the 32X & the Genesis with A/Cs.

Forgot you had the Sega CD as well. Since I don't have one of those, I'm unsure of how it'll hook up involving that.

The clips are shielding. They clip into the cart slot of the genny, then you try to get the 32x inserted without them popping out. They are a major pain in the ass to get installed, good luck.

Those RF shields are just there for FCC regulation. You could use the 32X w/o the shields if you liked in a house by yourself and didn't have a neighboring house within an arm's reach.

I think I have the manual for the 32X (including the instruction for hooking to Sega CDX and Genesis with Sega CD) and I could have it scanned in for ya.

If you want one, my email address should be in the profile. (I think I have my account set up to show addresses)

Yes, the shields are a major pain in the ass. Also, if you have a model 1, there is a piece of plastic that isn't neccessary (only for model 2). RE: CD, I have problems with some CD games when my 32x is plugged in.

So I can get away without using the shields then?

Wow, this is really weird because I was going to start this same topic! My thing is, I have a model 1 Genesis , a 32x and no cords. I need to know what I should be looking for to hook this damn thing up.

    Default Welll...

    You need two things...

    1. A power cord. The newer-model power cords fit fine... some NES cords work, too. The Sega CD cord MIGHT fit but its been a while since I looked.

    2. The Genesis-32x connector cord. It;s about a foot and a half long, with the Genesis 2 connectors on BOTH ends (imagine the part of the Genesis-to-TV cable that plugs into the Genesis itself.) Ya gotta have this cord or it ain't gonna work. I suppose you could try splicing 2 Genesis cords together through the cable connnectors or even doing some cutting and splicing, but I have no idea if it will work.

What I can't believe is that with the Genesis, SegaCD, and 32X I need three power supplies! Man that thing must suck power!

    Default yeah...

    yeah, it sucks all right...

The CDX is a much easier, smaller, and much more elegant solution to the 32x problem... of course, you run the possible risk of electrocuting yourself, but I've done it for years with no problems...

The CDX cuts it down to just TWO power cords and a hell of a lot less square footage.

When are you going to get that Virtual Hamster page up? Did you end up winning that prototype or was it someone else?

Good luck. You need a DIN to MINI-DIN to go from the Genesis1 to the 32x and you need a MINI-DIN composite plug to run to the tv. Power supply is no problem.

    Default who, me?

    Did you mean me, Tempest?

I've been so busy with the VGB book lately (not to mention my divorce and a serious illness in the family) that I've been too busy to mess with The32xMemorial site lately. We're going to upload the site to the VGB site and take it off the shitty Geocities host. I plan to to some major revisions then.

Ok now I'm confused. I'm assuming I have all the parts, but I'm not sure I got them all together properly.

There were two short wires with plugs on each end and a wire with two A/V plugs on one end. The one with the A/V plugs I assume goes in the 32X output jack with the A/V plugs going into the TV, but what about the other two? I had actually connected them together since they were too short to do anything with them on their own. Once I connected them I plugged it into the 32X input jack and into the Genesis output jack (thereby connecting the Genesis to the 32X). Does that make any sense?

BTW how does the Sega CD figure into all of this? Sure it must be interfaced with the 32X and Genesis in some way? Do you have to take the 32X out to play regular Sega CD games?

Sorry to hear about your divorce and the family illness. Glad to hear your taking the site off of Geocities though. If I have to see another one of those damn banners....

Ok, it's been awhile since I hooked up the genny/cd/32x monster, so I could be wrong. Best I remember the cd doesn't hook up to the 32x in any way, just the regular connection it has to the genny gives it access to the 32x. The short cord goes into the genny's output jack and into the 32x, then the rf or av cord goes from the out on the 32x to the tv. I've never had any problems playing cd games with the 32x attached, but my cd collection isn't as big as I'd like it to be.

With the 32x you should have 3 cables:

MINI-DIN to MINI-DIN (for connecting model II Genesis out to 32x in)
DIN (big) to MINI-DIN (small) adapter (for hooking up your model I Genesis out to the standard MINI-DIN plug)
MINI-DIN to A/V plugs (for connecting your 32x to your TV)

Again, I have problems running my CD games with the 32x installed but it seems not everyone does.

I recommend getting a model II Genesis for sound reasons though. With the Model I/32X/CD combo, I think you're outta luck if you want stereo sound.

CDX has no 32x processors, and Sega also says using a 32x on it is a bad idea.
