Default Playing NES Metroid ........ for the very first time!

Yep. Just got it in the mail a few days ago.

I've read here at these very boards that people think this game is too easy. It seems to be just about right for me, so I'm happy.

Also, I've never before seen any NES instruction manuals. The Metroid manual seems relatively classy - background story, slick paper, full color artwork. Were all or most NES manuals that good?

Lastly, I don't want any walkthroughs/spoilers/answers, so I haven't searched anywhere online yet for anything about the game. BUT, could any of you share any tips on the game, without giving away any secrets?

Metroid was when Nintendo just started slipping color in their manuals. Ice Hockey, Excite Bike etc. had illustrations from their Famicom counterparts but it was black and white. After that the booklets got real colorful and had nice layouts.. SMB2 & Kirby's Adventure were some good ones.

Most of the third party companies stuck with black and white prints and even omitted most of the original art for some crazy reason. Mega Man, Little Nemo and the Castlevania booklets come to mind.

The manual for Dragon Quest IV has some nice chibi art too.

What I hated about metroid: The fact you started with 30 health after you put in a password. SO ANNOYING.

Zillion, if you ask me, was the superior game, but Metroid picked way up after the first one.

Easy? I had a hard time playing it when I first got it. 'Course that's coming from someone who played Super Metroid first.

Congratulations is in order. It's an awesome game, definately one of the best released for the system!
I will admit that the game is rather hard, for me at least, and have yet to beat it. But I am working on that!

I don't think I've ever met a single person that has disliked Metroid, so I'd say you got a good deal, Steve.

As for tips... visit Ridley's hideout first. Trust me.

I can't stand playing the original metroid. Maybe its that I played 2 and 3 first, maybe its that Zillion is a better game, but the stupid 30 health, the weird feel to controlling samus, the game just hasn't aged well at all.

Well if you don't die than you don't have to worry about the 30 health thing. I can beat the game in a bout a hour or so it doesn't take that long to do. There's also a few energy tanks located near restarting points if you die or use a password that you can use to fully recharge your energy.

Personally in so ways I enjoy the original metroid but if you didn't play it back in the day you might not be too as fond of it. I kind of like not having a map and some of the other things they added or changed in some of the future metroid games myself.
