Default Wish for more variety from SCEA

    [Editted to be less fanboyish]

It just hit me, but Sony Computer Entertainment of America really has sold out to the casual gamer. And maybe that's fine, I mean if I was in business I'd go where the money is. And I think it really started with the PS2. How many PS2 games are PSX games with nicer graphics? And now look at PSP. To me it seems like the sega Nomad in that you can play your favorite PS2 games on the go, but you'll have to buy them a second time! And like I said I understand that sequels sell, but I wish SCEA would release just a little more original content.

For instance: Why weren't Vib Ribbon, Metal Slug 3, Beatmania & Gran Turismo Concept released here? I know they wouldn't have sold as well, but it would be really nice if the market leader would take a chance in the occasional risky yet innovative title.

Perhaps it's the way it has to be. The Dreamcast had an awesome amount of Original Content and it went belly up. But it doesn't mean I have to like it.

I'm not getting on a high horse on anything though, I am looking forward to the SEQUELS(!) to Ico, Suikoden, and Silent Hill...

And granted the Eyetoy fits the bill nicely, and I haven't bought one so maybe I should just have a coke and a smile

One could say the same thing of the GBA. I'd say Its more of a sign that fresh gaming ideas 1.are harder to come by and 2. arent guaranteed to sell aswell as a trusty sequal.

What can i say... Its great to be under SCEE jurisdiction

And? The PSP looks to kick major ass!

Theres a lot I want to say, but meh, I've said it all before. I do think this is the first "Sony sucks" topic of this month though!

*ugh* I really hate that term.
So Sony have "sold out", you say? At which point in the past did they profess to hold any kind of alternative position?

Sony are a company. Companies conduct business. The aim of business is to make money.
    Simple, really.

Here we go again. And ya know, somehow I always get sucked into the thread anyway, no matter how many times it comes up. Is it that I actually like these anti-Sony things on an unconscious level?

    Anyway:
    Vib Ribbon - won't sell
Metal Slug 3 - Isn't this being released?
    Beatmania - too risky
GT Concept - not sure. Since everytime a new GT comes out in the US it sells a bajillion copies, maybe they just don't want to cloud the water.

    GT Concept
Probably to keep from competing with themselves ... especially now that we know GT4 is going to be a PSP launch title.

Anyway, this is my new response to all these threads ... get used to it.

The only complaint I have with SCEA and note the A this applies only to Sony Computer Entertainment of America is their stance against 2D games. Mainly they hate them. Or so I've heard. So many good 2D games I wish they're considering letting companies localize over here. But at least Disgaea, La Pucelle and Growlanser have managed to slip through the cracks.... although Growlanser more like squeezed then sliped.

Otherwise I love my PS2 as much as my XboX or Cube.

I can't beleive Sony is entirely to blame, despite how many would make it sound. I'd place at least 70% of the blame on a given software publisher for either rolling over on the first "no," or themselves not seeing any return on their investment. An example of the latter, take La Pucelle: just came out, great game. But it's a niche title; there's no way the average Joe, when seeing the new Madden or Resident Evil title on the shelf, or a game with some disproportionate anime characteron the cover, is going to go with something with a little more depth lacking name recognition. Mastiff cranked it out anyway, seeing how much buzz was around Disgaea. Regardless of Sony's feelings on the subject, it takes a determined publisher to do all the footwork to make the game, and it's ultimately their gamble on if its profitable or not.
And as far as Sony not approving games, I never heard the whole story of Growlanser Generations, but I do recall someone mentioning Sony didn't approve of that, but most retailers in my area are taking preorders for its release in June, so somebody must have shown some persistence at WD.

Anyhow, now if Sony sold out, do you think when Nintendo was in Sony's posistion back in the day did they sell out too?

You know, you're probably right. While I don't really know one way or another (having been more into C64 and later Amiga during the NES), I'll bet there were a bunch of cool NES games that didn't get localized.

So eating some crow here, take Sony out of the arguement. I wish that original games that I found exciting sold better, instead of the cookie cutter sequels / movie tie-ins we seem to get more of. If that is a stupid or naive wish then so be it...

    Cheers,

Apparently Sony canned Goemon and told WD they had to release the two Growlanser games together instead of seperately. And I don't know if you've noticed lately but RPGs haven't been a niche genre in the US since Final Fantasy 7.

And the only reason La Pucelle came out over here was because the unexpected success of Disgaea.

But all these games are Tactical RPGs which seem to be *in* at the moment. We haven't seen a single traditional 2D rpg for the system yet, they do make them.

That makes much more sense. And, WHYYYYYYYY do they keep making crappy games? (All together, class) Beacause people keep buying them.

It's like whining over and over that McDonald's sells shit. No kidding. Guess why? It has something to do with that "billions and billions served" under the golden arches ...
