Nothing really new in this story at all. In fact, I hope that the fact that classic gaming has a huge cult following isn't really news to them.

I don't think I liked the way that article ended. It kinda sounded like "Yeah, a lot of people say they like old games, but when they actually play them they see that they suck."
Still, cool article.
I only need 2 more NES games (US)!
That is exactly what the end of the article is saying. Which is exactly true to me for a few games. But those games are usually just the ones I played briefly when I was littlier, not the ones I actually like.Originally Posted by Rev. Link
It was still a pretty neat article though.
BTW, was that Flack's gameroom? Looked like his but from a different angle.
Yes, it is. Someone posted looking for an interviewee a few weeks ago and Flack stepped up to the plate.Originally Posted by Pantechnicon

Yup, that's me in the pic. Looks like it finally ran!
Must go read now, brb.
They asked me that same question and my response was, "I don't think it's about graphics, I think it's about gameplay. There are tons of games that look better than Space Invaders and Pac-Man, but back then it wasn't about graphics. Those were games that created genres." Something to that effect. Apparent;y that wasn't the angle they were looking for.Originally Posted by Rev. Link
It would have been nice if they went with your angle, Flack, as it would have have been a more sensible way to end the article than dumping on River Raid.Originally Posted by Flack
"Many who go back and play the older games are often surprised, however, at the crudeness of the graphics, said Steven L. Kent, author of "The Ultimate History of Video Games."
The 1982 game "River Raid" is a good example, he said. Players fly a fighter jet over a river filled with ships and barges but "when you go back, you see that the river was a blue rectangle with lots of gray rectangles for boats."
"A lot of people look back on old games like a kind of Camelot. Only when you do, you see that the castle smelled, the food was rancid and the maidens were bloated."
What exactly was Steven Kent smoking when he said this? He picked a pretty bad example for a game that allegedly hasn't stood the test of time. Gray rectangles for boats? I'd have to say that River Raid is hardly smelly, rancid or bloated. I'd love to hear his thoughts on Pitfall II.

I was just about to ask that. :POriginally Posted by Pantechnicon
Who wouldn't recognize that checkerboard flooring and row of arcade cabnets?
I spoke to Steve on the phone today and he went back and took a look at the game while we were talking. He said that the river looks more realistic than what he remembered but he stands by his comments about the boats.Originally Posted by Cav

Hey, it's cool that the two of you actually talk. He quotes your book in several places in his book, ya know.
BTW, I think Kent is right. That is one game that has just NOT aged well. It's still fun to play, IF you have experience playing it. I picked it up for the first time last year and was like 'tough game, but it looks like .....!'

Dang... I hope collecting doesnt get too popluar, I dont want to miss out on games at flea markets and such. There are already 6 collectors in my city alone now... it was ok when there were only 2, but now somebody may beat me to goodwill and get staium events for .99 knowing how much its worth...ahhh. And right when I saw that pic I know I saw it in the gameroom before.

It ran with a full color big photo in the Eugene Register-Guard here too. Didn't know it was Flack, though!
Plus it was linked to on Yahoo's front page last night!
VERY cool!

If anyone has a print copy of the article, I would love to get one. Of all places, it didn't in our local paper!
You're big-time, Flack!
This same article ran in our northern NJ Herald News over the weekend! It's got your picture in it and everything!
PS thanks for the free CGE publicity. If this ran in a NJ paper I'm guessing it ran in lots of papers across the country.
The article ran in my local paper as well...it was in the "Technology" section on Monday night.
I remember looking at that checkerboard floor and thinking "Hey, i've seen that room before!"
Flack i might be able to get you a copy of the article, but it only includes the picture of you in your game room.
Possibility is infinity! You must be satisfied!
You just can't handle my jawusumness responces. -The Sizz
Yep - appeared Sunday in the Metrowest News up my way, just outside of Boston. Color picture and all.
