Weird promo Olympic NES cart found? What the heck? Big pics

OK, was in a pawn shop this evening just for the hell of it and found this weird cart. It has no top label, what you see is what you get and the back is a normal NES cart back.





Now, I couldn't figure out what the heck this is as I'd never seen anything like it. So I got home with it just now and popped it in the NES. Boots up and it's Super Spike V-Ball. Same as the real game in every respect except for the weird labeling.

Now what I REALLY want to know is...was this authorized by Nintendo? And was this done officially by Kellogs? Has anyone seen ANYTHING like this before?

Beach Volleyball/Volleyball de plage

As you can see, not only does it have a bunch of Kelloggs copyright stuff, but it also has Tony the Tiger and the symbol for the Olympics and the Canadian maple leaf with an Olympic torch in front of it.

Anyone have any idea what's going on? And what the heck might this be worth???

Checked inside too....the board is an official NIntendo board with ROMs, not EPROMs. It's a normal Super Spike V-Ball inside...so did Kellogg's do this as some sort of contest giveaway for a Canadian Summer Games? Or.....?

dude.....that's a rare one, i'd say. what you want to do is contact kellog's up there (or down here) directly and ask them for any info they might have on the promotion (and if there's any stuff lying around in a warehouse somewhere you could score, lol)

That's especially strange since it says 1996. One would think they'd at least be doing SNES games. Seems kind of odd.

One could have removed the normal label, used a typewriter or printer to write "Beach Volleyball/Volleyball de plage" on a sticker, then stuck it on. It could be real, but a commercial NES release in 1996 in North America? We must find more info on it!

See, but if someone did that, it would be a much less professional label. Why would anyone bother to make a Kellogg's Olympic label for the game? I can't see someone privately bothering.....

I think what he's saying is that Kellogg probably had an olympic promotion back in '96 (ie: free set of 6 Olympic stickers inside!), and someone took the volleyball one, typed a name on the bottom and put the sticker on the cart. I think the fact that the sticker is less than a perfect fit, and the game info looks typed on makes this a likely scenario. I denfinitely would have picked it up had I seen it though.

Well I thought iwas something neat till I saw the date, and then really looked at the sticker. it looks just like a sticker from a pack of cards that was put on there since the label had come off and they wanted to be able to sell the cart. Most nes labels fit that entire surface its on. So I would have to say its nothing unusually unless you can contact kellogs and find out.

Well, I know it wasn't typed on by someone. The whole label is a laminated pre-printed label. It's not handmade in any way. It's not done that way, unless Kellogg's preprinted one that had "Beach Volleyball" typed on the label already. It seems like a stretch but I suppose it's possible. I just don't know.

I agree with geelw though. Call up the Canadian division of Kelloggs' customer service, and ask them what the deal was. They should be able to look up the necessary information on it.

Exactly, remember that beach volleyball made is debut in 1996 at Atlanta. I'm 99.9% sure this sticker came from a promotion of Kellogg Canada. Someone got a crappy Super Spike V-Ball, find it in the cereal, put the sticker on it and that's it.

I've been scouring Google for you for about....30 mins....trying to find info on the game and mostly the origin of what I believe is just a sticker from a Kellogg's promo stuck on a SSVB cart.

I have found nothing, but it seems as if it was just simply a kids way of labeling his label-less game.

Yeah, Seriously...That theory really doesn't make a whole lot of sense...who the hell would rip the label off a game with do sticker residue or sticker remnants just to put a stupid Kellog's label on it. Why the hell would Kellog's put a label for a NES volleyball game in a cereal box?

"Hey Kids!! Rip the fucking label off you game and put our mis-sized label on!" You Mom will love that you ruin your game and you will love the new ghetto label!"
