Default Monday Morning MAME Club [7/26/04] - Super Burgertime

This week's choice has been making me hungry all weekend. I cheated and started playing it this past weekend, and I have to say this game is pretty addictive! I had no idea it even existed. Maybe we can all talk about the differences between this and the original?

Super Burgertime is Kaine23's MAME Club pick of the week!

Oh man, I love this game... I remember when I was just looking through random games and was surprised to find a new Burger Time game... the game is completely chaotic, with crazy crap happening all over the place, and the colorful graphics and music just scream japanese, but the game is tons of fun. I'd give it an 8/10

I had never heard of this game before Kaine23 send it to me. A friend of mine is a big fan of the original (I never was), so through him I was introduced to the original over the past couple of years.

Right off the bat there are two big differences between the two games. One is the ability to replentish and change weapons. On the original, you had to be pretty sparing with your pepper shaker. On Super Burgertime, I just attacked at will, knowing that when it ran out I'd grab another frying pan or spatula to continue my attacks. The other big change is the ability to jump, which changes the whole game for me. I was always impressed by how my friend "worked" the playing field, making the weiners and pickles go where he wanted. In SBT, I just kind of ran around, knowing I could jump my way out of most situations (especially with the magic glowing jumpy shoes).

I liked the music and the graphics, I didn't think they took away from the feel of the original game. It was fun, especially the later levels that were "multi-screened" so scrolling was going on.

Great pick, Kaine23! Anyone else tried it out yet?

Thanks guys! I didn't know about this game till I found it by accident myself and started playing it and was quickly hooked on the franticness. I love the fact you can use different weapons and the "food's" reaction to being attacked by them is pretty humorous too!

For some reason or another, I can't get into this game. It just doesn't feel like Burgertime to me. I like some of what everyone else likes (the different weapons, etc), but it just feels like Data East's inferior version of Bubble Bobble. I don't like the bosses, nor do I even care for the hideous graphics or sound. Giant lighters? Flying bamboo rockets? Bosses? The Japanese have sure done a number on this game, and for once, it's terrible. I'd take the original any day.

I had played this before but decided to load it up on my xbox and give it another go. I really like it because you can advance through levels and fight bosses. The one thing I don't like is having to jump up and down on the pieces. I kinda like the old version where you just had to walk across it. Sill a great game though.

I actually played the real arcade version of this many years ago in Alton Towers, UK. As a BurgerTime fan I was most disappointed with it. I now own it for MAME - my intial dislike for the game remains. It may have BurgerTime in the title, but it doesn't play like BurgerTime... Shame!
