    Default DOWNTIME TONIGHT

At long last, this fairly trustworthy but aging server is going to retire as the Digital Press site moves to a swift new machine with lots of bandwidth. We've done some testing with the transfer rates, you'll really like the improved speed.

The downside is that we need to take the old boy down for a bit. At the moment we're looking at 8pm EDT; could be down for as long as four hours (and DNS changes can take as long as 24 depending on location).

If this changes I'll post the update here.

I believe this will be WELL worth it, actually being able to edit our posts without waiting 5 mins and being able to surf the forums when there's a lot of users on at the same time.

    I can't wait! Good luck.

So, while the server's down, you can all come into the IRC channel instead. ;-)

That will improve a little but it has very little to do with the server! That's a flaw in the PHP BB software. We've upgraded that too so perhaps this issue has been resolved but I can't promise that the fast server will result in fast forum post edits. Sorry!

Must be doing it "off peak" then

Though admitedly it's been fine for me also until this Tribes contest kicked off... then I started to see it chug a lot...

    Notice two problems so far...

    1) Links to the Tribes avatars are off so if anyone (like myself) was partaking in that, you've probably got a red X in place.

    2) Custom titles seem to have disappeared, and the field to put them in your profile has vanished also.

Other things such as website location, AIM/ICQ details etc can easily be re-entered of course...

The move is done but DNS "the pointers" are still being resolved over the 'net, so where you are and who gives you your internet will play a part in just how quickly you see all of the changes. Basically if you're reading this you've got the bulk of it. The searchable database is "in the works" right now.

To get a really good idea about how fast things are now, check out the screen shot gallery and watch how quickly the screens pop up.

Cool, nice and fast. But it looks like a bunch of phpBB features vanished... Did the software get rolled back to something older than when the site was dumped/moved or something?

    Here's where we're at:
    - the CORE of the site has been moved over. That's primarily the file structure, the 'net pointers (DNS), many of the files, and the forum database.
    - tonight, the rest of the files (which should resolve any pictures you see missing on your screen).
    - I'll be tinkering with the forum mods (online/offline indicator, custom titles, and 'who's online today' features) tonight and tomorrow.
    - the searchable database (DP Guide Online) will be available by next weekend.

    Hope this helps!

I didn't think it would affect the forums so drastically. Try editing a post or doing a search - it's pretty amazing how speedy that goes now. Yesterday it was taking 45 seconds to edit a post. I can get used to this

Wow...this is extremely fast. It posts pretty much instantly. I've not tried editing a post yet but even on cable I had to wait probably a good minute for it to go through.

I stopped into to check a thread that was updated and missed this thread before it went down. So, I browse the updated thread and click my DP B&S link on mozilla and BAM it pops up...I'm like...uhhh so, I'm like...maybe it had most of the info saved from me being frequent here...so i started clicking on other things, as in the corners I never get to around here(since there is so much!). And...my jaw is on the floor. Congrats Joe, job well done, whether it be the server or the software, it rocks! I haven't needed to edit a post yet but I'm sure it will be a little swifter if not a lot. "Joe The Magnificent" does it again!

Eek, preview doesn't work either incase anybody was curious

Ugh thank god. It wasn't that bad EXCEPT when I had to edit a post.

Also is it me or are (most of the) avatars down?
