Default How many of you check out Half Price Books?

How many of you look for video games at Half Price Books?

Don't EVER sell games there, you get a ton less than EB, Software Etc, even... Well actually you can sell them MMORPG's because they don't know any better hehe.

But as far as buying goes, they have some damn good prices on things, especially on older stuff that they really don't know much about. And they do sell overstocked new items for pretty cheap sometimes.

Mine isn't in an easy drive, so I only hit it every couple of weeks, but I always find something I'd WANT to get if my wife weren't watching over my shoulder lol

Hm... this is the first time I've heard of them!

Is it a local area chain thing? I know we didn't even have a Wal-Mart around here until 2000.

They're in about a dozen states:

    http://www.halfpricebooks.com/neighb...locations.html

They're gigantic, and a great place for books (duh hehe) as well as video games, movies (although the anime is expensive...) and CD's

Ah, that 'splains it. The nearest one to me is Pittsburgh, something like 6 hours drive from NJ!

Hey, is that Laura "Atar1g1rl" in the advertisement for the site?!

I didn't know they had actual B&M stores too. I've purchased several computer books from their zShop on Amazon.com. Very fast, very reliable, and slightly better than average prices.

I'll try and hit up the PV location when I'm down in AZ in a few weeks

The ones near me are very small and carry a couple of crappy genesis games and what not. I did one time find Bahumut Lagoon, Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Warrior 6 (which I bought) for the super famicom complete which I bought there. The much further one from me in Mesa had a loose genesis battletoads cart a few complete gen games and a complete mario all stars for 4 bucks which was nice. I've also got some old ninteno power mags there but that's about it. It's really nice if you're looking for complete old software (Ultima = yay) for like 4-8 bucks.

I've been to one a few time but they didn't have much for video games.

There are actually two Half-Priced books by me, and I always check them out, because I randomly find old boxed games for $.99. Not too shabby at all.

Brookfield and Northridge, right GrayFox? looks like I've got some competition to find deals there hehe

Yeah console games are trade-in only so it's a hodgepodge and a crapshoot whether or not they have a lot.

I go to the Brookfield one, and the one near 76th street near Southridge. Is there one near Northridge? I don't go overthere too often, but yeah, they give crap trade-in at Half-Price. I mean, you CAN trade in anything there, which is nice, but I wouldn't suggest trading in games there.

    * I've noticed that the Southridge one is cheaper than the Brookfield one. Old games at the Brookfield go for like $4. The Southridge one has prices usually around the $.99 range.

    Cool!

Yeah, near the old Northridge Mall...

Corner of Brown Deer and 80th I think, on the north side of the street.

I live in the northern burbs, so I don't get down to Brookfield or Southridge much =/ Hope Northridge is cheaper than Brookfield like Southridge is hehe

Damn, and I thought I was the only one. I found some decent NES games at the Northridge store not too long ago.

Oooh, Half Price Books, I love that place. Since the stuff their costs so little (Half Life for 2 bucks, A nightmare on Elm Street DVD for 3), I go their all the time.

I go there sometimes, not regularly, though.

I'm interested in strategy guides, and once I found the first print Disgaea guide for $5. They charge for every guide $5, and sometimes they have older game books. Just a couple of days ago I bought six guides I needed.

When it comes to console games, they overprice. Pretty terrible. They wanted for a used Outlaw Volleyball (Blockbuster exclusive) $20 (!) while the game was still offered new by Blockbuster for $5. Even for very common used PS1 and current systems sports titles they charge $8 to $20.

I tried to get rid of around thirty books, and with books it's like with games - as a general rule they are not a good investment, and you get a very small portion of the original price back. Thirty to fifty cents per book? That was even for me not enough.

I'd never even think about selling a game, though.

The one around here jacks up prices ike crazy. Power Serve 3d Tennis for the PSX - $25. UGH. And I didn't see anything older than that. They had some PC games for alright prices, but nothing spectacular.

I've had some good finds at HPB...Best stuff was some SegaCD rarities like Third World War and others for $4.99. They usually have Dreamcast and Intellivision for some reason, or perhaps those are the same games that never sell

Yes! I often say how I don't buy things too often retroactively.. but make no mistake that if I happen upon something good I'll buy it in a heartbeat.

Not that long ago at Half Price Books I bought several really nice and mint Saturn games which were priced for about 4 bucks and they were 20% off. So I got stuff like a minty Dragon Force, Panzer Dragoon, and a bunch of other Saturn RPG's for about 2-3 bucks each

Sounds like a cool store. Of course there's none on Long island, or even in NY at all...

I just got Resident Evil 2 for N64 there today for $5. I couldn't find it anywhere else (even eBay) for less than $10-15.
