Tapper.. Atari 2600 compared to Colecovision.. thanks

Can someone please compare these for me. What I really want to know is this.. is the Colecovision version graphically superior to its 2600 counterpart? I want a version similiar to that in MAME.... do I have to buy the real arcade machine to get that type of graphics or is their a cartridge based version that approaches that quality?

Well the colecovision version of EVERY gme is going to be graphically superior without question. That's like comparing PS1 to PS2. That being said, it's NOT going to compare to the arcade, just keep using mame, buy a hotrod SE Joystick if you need to.

NO QUESTION, as Sylentwulf says, the ColecoVision version is far superior to the 2600, though the 2600 version does a great job considering the system it's on.

You might also want to check out the C64 or Atari 8-bit computer versions, they're also quite good. Someone else can probably fill you in on which ones have which levels missing, I can tell you that the ColecoVision version is actually "Root Beer Tapper" and has all four boards plus the can-shake bonus round.

Thanks guys, based on your answers it seems as if it was a stupid question. However you will have to excuse me, I just got the Colecovision yesterday, having never played it before I have no idea how good it is as a system. The only game I have for it is Venture, but I plan to add to that list. I have Tapper for the 2600 and know what its like so I was wondering if I should get the Colecovision version. Which I am sure I will now.

As a note I got the system free, it was only missing the cable to the the tv, and I had a spare phono cable so I Just had to buy a phono to coax adapter and I have a fully complete functioning system.

With this new addition to my family, I now have 14 consoles hooked up to my tv and ready to play, only power and the push of a button being required.

Venture is a great game to start out with! Try to get Ladybug as well...another great title. The Colecovision actually has quite a few awesome titles to choose from. If you can get Atarisoft's Centipede and a Roller Controller, well, you are darn near arcade perfect right there. Frogger is a great choice as well. So is Donkey Kong Jr. Miner 2049er. Mr. DO. The list goes on and on. Good luck with the system, I am sure you'll enjoy it!

The only problem you're gonna have getting Tapper for the Coleco, is that it's pretty rare. About $20-$25 on Ebay.

Have you considered picking up Midway Arcade's Greatest Hits 2 for the Playstation? That's got a very faithful translaton of Root Beer Tapper on it.

The trackball and Centipede suggestion also sounds very cool. I am sorry i didn't get to experience this system in its prime, only now do I know I missed out on some great gaming.

Better start saving your money today for the coin-op, they tend to go for a lot of $$. If you've got the Roller Controller, I'd suggest Slither over Centipede. Not that Centipede isn't great, but Slither is just so much better on the CV. And where else you gonna play Slither??

The numeric pad was used mainly for games like Mouse Trap - the original coin-op has color coded buttons that open/close the doors (but you prob'ly knew that) and the keypad simulates the experience quite nicely.

I'd like to mention Looping, wonderful little game with music that's just outta sight. Very true to the original arcade version.

Check out Pepper II, too. Fantastic.

The CV is a system that has lots of great titles and few duds. One of the best systems out there.

Considering the general high quality of most Colecovision titles, I wonder if it wouldn't help more to list ones that should be avoided like the plague (i.e. Space Fury)?

AFAIK it is missing. I'm pretty good at this game and I've never seen it.

Plus, if you wanna get really nit picky, on the saloon screen, you only ever get 3 guys at once vs. the arcade having 4. I know this is due to the resoultion different from TV vs. arcade and they had to squash it down a bit.

Still, it's a good port. I think the customers could look a little better, but it still looks great and plays sweet.

You could also check out the ColEx, an extensive guide to the software available on the ColecoVision. Most of the bases are covered, although a couple of obscure games, mostly prototypes like Power Lords and Steamroller, haven't been reviewed yet.

Mountain Dew is the drink of choice in the 2600 version for sure, and maybe in the Commodore version of the game.

Yes, the C64 version has Mountain Dew in it...

The cartridge version (due to the 16k limit) only has the first two bars in it. The tape/disc version has the full game instead...
