Old PC emulation

Is there a place where I can find roms for old PC games. Namely Sam and Max. My last disk has gone and now I cant install the game.

Hmm...Sam N Max, that's one of the few lucasarts adventure games I haven't played, I think I shall get it. Just replayed monkey island and enjoyed the hell out of it!

If you're new to IRC and handling Fserves.. it'd probably be a tall order to even know where to start. But it's worth it as they have a lot of games there. ( http://www.old-games.net has some info on their channel).

so how does a "bit torrent" work anyways?

You download the bittorrent software and install it. Once you have done that, any time you click on a link that leads to a bittorrent file, you "open it form its current location", and a dialog box will open where you want to save the software in question. It generally takes awhile to download stuff, but if you are patient then it is worth the wait.

Remember not to download copies of software that you don't already own. You said you already own a copy of Sam and Max but that you lost one of the disks.

get all my old games there....theres also alot of programs floating around that will emulate dos so those games will run right

Exactly. Nothing beats the real thing, and nothing brings back the nostalgia of playing old dos games like actually booting up a dos box.

What's the difference from playing it on a dos only box vs. playing it on a box that has say... windows XP and is running a virtual machine?

It's pretty much the same.. only difference is you're dos "box" and it's OS is now running inside it's own contained environment like any other program. I dunno usually I'm the first to say the real thing is best, but in this case I don't think it makes any difference :P If you got the faster hardware and required software so that you don't need your entire pc's resources to have a dedicated DOS environment, then use it I say

My biggest problem with playing old dos games on a new pc, ESPECIALLY running XP, is that either games will not run under the XP version of dos.(Usually this can be overcome) The big problem is that you will usually encounter unexpected game crashes. Anytime I play an old dos game on my pc I make sure to save often, because once you have an hour or two invested you're usually just asking for the game to crash.

I even created a boot menu on my computer so that I can swap between Windoze, Linux, and dos. This for the most part that has fixed my problems running anything on my computer. Although in dos I still find it necessary to tinker with memory locations so that it slows down enough. Occasionally you will also find a few of the later dos based games and programs(made when windows 3.11 was taking hold) which are TSR's(Terminate but Stay Resident). Dos has a big problem with this in general so that requires even more tinkering.

Actually what I was talking about was a virtual machine.. i.e something like VMWare or what I use.. Microsoft Virtual PC

Basically they're stand alone environments that allow you to run multiple PC-based operating systems simultaneously. So yeah in other words, you could have Windows ME running inside a window on an XP machine. Or you could put in XP, 98, Linux, Beos, or of course.. DOS. And when I say window, of course you could just make it full screen and be entirely inside that OS.

It's great. You could install windows 98 and have fun checking out viruses safely and other exploits. Or you could try installing software on a virtual machine and see how it runs before REALLY installing it on your actual machine. Or of course like we're talking about, you can just make it a Dos box and run Dos games on it. Works great

Chock up another vote for DOSBox - It's great for running those stubborn old programs that just refuse to work under the normal Windows dos prompt.
