If you want to meet the most annoying collectors, check this newsletter board, especially the posts in the late 90s, you actually subscribe to this board and receive emails everyday from other people's posts. Sometimes I feel embarrased to be NG collector.
Amazing how polarized this simple thread caused people to become. My response was far less visceral.Originally Posted by Pedro Lambrini

So where's the 'Real Collectors...' thread? Real Collectors don't take pee breaks while hunting.
I actually dislike among collectors the same things that I dislike among all people- avarice, self-importance, inconsiderate behavior, dishonesty.
Now THIS is a great thread.
If you got aggravated reading it, that's GOOD. See, that's what forums are all about! We're not all going to agree with each other. We clearly all like different kinds of games, have different theories on what is good and bad practice, and vary wildly on our approach to gaming vs. collecting.
And yet, does a thread like this not open your eyes sometimes to the way "the other ones" think and see things?
Hey, I'm not easily irritated, and I disagree with him in most cases (probably because I fall into those categories), but I do understand the feeling.
The irritating list is complicated so I'm not really sure where I'd fall, but I do have the following potentially irritating collector-traits:
- I am VERY organized. I really need to know where any game is at any given time, either for playing or researching.
- I buy or trade more than I play. My playing days are cut short with way too many side projects, though I'm tilting the scale somewhat to compensate for that (see the "(late) Summer Break" thread).
- I sometimes buy games that I have no intention of every playing. I don't think people in this category are being malicious in any way, it's more of an obsessive-compulsive thing. Pieces missing from a collection are like vast holes opened in time-space continuum... they need to be plugged up, fast!
- I sometimes buy games with the intention to sell later. I am not a game seller by any means, but anything I can do to turn my collecting "know how" into money means more money to buy games. I like games a lot.
- I am part of a team that sometimes holds prototypes, sometimes sells them, sometimes shares them. For various reasons, from helping defray the costs of running an annual national Expo to simply wanting things to be done right.
Ultimately I am a gamer, but as someone else here has already said, I never know when I'm going to get an itch to play a particular game, and if I DON'T have it... now THAT irritates me
collecting, selling, gaming, trading, everything invloved with games... its about having fun.
