Default Sega Mega Cd 2 Repair (Sorted now, feel free to lock!) Thanx

Hi, i just got my first Mega Cd II today after a Three year hunt for one
but i cant seem to get it working i have a power supply in it, its connected up to the megadrive but im not getting any power into the mega cd II...

if i opened it up are there any things i could check for to repair or anything ive missed on setting it up???

Do i need to use the Mixing Output on the back at all too? all i have plugged into the back of the mega cd is the power, is that right?

    Many Thanx!

    Adam

They are pretty flakey machines, I've had a couple of broken M-CDs in the past.
I know the Model 1 machiens can usually be fixed by replacing or shorting the 'F1' fuse near the power supply, but I'm not sure if this applies to the second model aswell. I'd have a look at mine, but I'm away from home at the moment. PM me in a couple of days if you're still stuck and I can try to help...

The Mixing jack isn't needed. In fact, I'm don't know what it is used for.

Also try cleaning your Mega Drive's Expansion Port / the MegaCD's connector, those two gave a lot of trouble. You get a black screen just like when you start the MegaDrive sans Game

It applies to both models. The fuse is usually the cause of a dead Sega CD, and I've seen solutions ranging from replacing the fuse to just removing it and running a wire instead. If you do a search on the forums, I posted a link to someones website with a HowTo on replacing the fuse with pictures

also is the metal needed underneath the megadrive or is that just to hold it in place?

The mixing jack is needed if you want to use the phono outputs to hook the MCD up to a Hi-Fi or similar. You connect it to the headphone output of an MD1 and into the back of the MCD to carry the stereo sound through (why this can't be or isn't done internally I don't know). I only know that as I actually had my model 1 units hooked up that way for a while.

Can't help you with the metal plate I'm afraid, they are needed to ensure a proper connection with the MCD1 - it seems to stop any lift between to two consoles breaking the expansion connection, but I don't have a MCD2.

You do have both the MD and MCD2 plugged into AC power, right? They both need plugged in, not just one or the other.

Obvious, I know. Just checking, cuz it wasn't clear from your post. ;)

Good stuff Always nice to see a dead console resurrected!
I'd had a dead MegaCD1 for about 3 years before someone pointed out the same trick in another thread a while back. I replaced the fuse with wire and it's been fine ever since
