Default Is Sony still reparing PS2 systems for free?

My buddy has a busted PS2 with the typical "Disc Read Error" problems. I remember hearing a while ago that Sony lost a class action lawsuit and has to repair broken PS2's for free. Are they still doing this? I tried searching the forums but I couldn't find a direct link to the info. Can anyone help out?

That would be news to me.

I'm still fixing more than 6 a week, just for local demand. Newest version ones too. They seem to be even less reliable.

Yes, they are still doing this. In fact I just got my PS2 back after Sony repaired it for free. I didn't have "disc read errors", at least not in the way most people seem to experience them. My PS2 would make grinding noises and stop reading discs after being on for awhile. When I mentioned that my discs appeared to be getting scratched because of this, they even offered to replace the discs (either with a new copy or by paying replacement value). They said this would take 6-8 weeks, so I don't think I'll do this unless I find some games that don't work.

What you need to do is call 1-800-345-7669 and describe the problem. Hopefully they will tell you they will do a free repair and give you instructions for shipping the PS2 to them. You will need to pay for shipping, which for me was about $14 including insurance and tracking. When you get your PS2 back (it took about 2 weeks from the time I shipped it to the time I got it back) it will have a new 90 day warranty.

You may also want to read the Playstation Repair FAQ at www.gamefaqs.com. Unfortunately, I can't link directly to it. To find it, go to Playstation 2 > Playstation 2 Hardware FAQs > Disc Read Error Sony Repair FAQ.

I can vouch for Omnedon's repair skills. I'm very happy with one he fixed for me.
