Does the GC Game Boy player need a gameboy or or controller?

What do you use to play the game I mean controller or gameboy,

Does it play games without the gameboy or is it just for playing on tv?

Dude the gameboy player is just like the SUPER GAMEBOY - you can play GBA/GBC/GB games on your tv via your gamecube. You don't need a gba - it replaces the gba - you just use the gamecube controller, just like playing any gamecube game.

There is a specialized controller made by Hori that is really close to the style of the Super Famicom controller, except it's got all the cube buttons on it, sans tha yellow stick - I picked one up, it's pretty neato.

Jive3D, as soon as I saw this thread I was going to mention the Hori pad. You can not beat this thing for playing games that use the digital pad on the GC (the GC's digital pad sucks BAAAAADLY). Of course, all GB/GBA games use the digital pad, so this controller rocks.

Who's stupid-ass fucking idea was it to put that tiny cross pad on the GC anyway? What, they had millions of left overGBA pads, so they said, "Fuck it?"

I can see it now....Nintendo of Japan Company meeting...

"Let's put a tiny pad on the GC controller."
"Yeah, nobody's gonna use it anyway...because we're going to force you to play almost exclusively 3D games!"
"Yeah, and kids have small hands. Considering we haven't payed the slightest mind to the media in the last 10 years, and we don't realize adults make up an enormous amount of the gaming population, a tiny pad is a great idea!"
"Yeah, and being Japanese, we often have smaller hands than EVERYBODY ELSE IN THE WORLD except pygmies. So fuck the rest of em. Let's make a pad to fit our hands and give cramps to all those stupid gaijins!"
    "All hail the emporer!"

Ok, being mean here, but I just can't see the logic behind that pad. Buy the Hori...You'll never regret it.

    That's hillarious dude.

The HORI was not available for sale at regular game stores in the US like EB or whatever - you can buy it online really easy though and it will cost you about 20 bucks. I bought mine here in NYC at Multimedia 1.0 for 23 bucks I think - it's pretty cool, totally worth it if you use the GB Player as much as I do.

Unfortunately, I've never seen one in a brick and mortar store, though NCSX sells them for $22.

It's also worth mentioning that the Gameboy Player can be used with an actual GBA as a controller. Just connect to it any one of the controller ports, turn it on, and wait a few seconds. And if you're using an SP, turn off the screen light to save battery power.

The Hori Pad is indeed Asia-only.

Seems every importer sells em. I think I got mine from LIkSang for $18 or something.

word of advice, don't use an SP for the hookup, since you can barely touch the L and R buttons with the plugin in the way
And don't bring up that stupid girlie Aladdin rip off! Shantea?

Come to think of it...why the hell doesn't anybody bash that shitty GC controller more often?

a.) Sliding-clicky shoulder buttons...the analog-ness is nice, but they feel wrong. so wrong. especially when shooting with them. Still better than the spring loaded garbage in the XBox controller, though.
b.) Z-button's in the wrong place (guess they forgot where your index finger was supposed to go).
c.) Yes, the d-pad. So horrible.
    d.) Looks dumb
e.) FEELS WRONG. Something about the plastic. Like sliding your fingertips over a chalkboard. *squirms*

In summary, the Dual Shock is better, even with those hateful sharp edged analog sticks (bump needs to be more gradual/wider).

Now that's funny, I think the GC controller is the BEST CONSOLE controller EVER.

Yeah, I think the controller's excellent too. The only games I wouldn't want to play with it are FPSes and fighting games, for obvious reasons. But for most other genres and arcade games, it's great. The analog stick is smooth and responsive enough to be used instead of a D-Pad in most cases (a few exceptions, like rapid presses in the same direction), and the analog shoulder buttons make racing games much more enjoyable. And you don't have to bend your left hand at a weird angle to get the left analog stick like on the Dual Shock. The only functional shortcoming is that god-forsaken D-Pad.

So here's another GB Player question. If one had, say, Pac-Man Vs., and wanted to use a second 'cube with a GB Player instead of an actual GBA to control Pac-Man on a separate screen...could it be done?

Not like I have two 'cubes, but I'm just wondering, for the sake of shits and/or grins.

Works fine. I've seen photos of Crystal Chronicles on 5 Gamecubes with 4 Gameboy Players, 4 GBA-to-Gamecube link cables, and 4 Wavebirds. I'm sure someone has the URL (I don't).

I was wondering this myself. You know thinking about the future when we can pick up a bunch of this stuff for dirt cheap. I'd like to see the pictures if somebody has them.

EdO, pm me if you want to know how to remover the "compressed clicky" from the shoulder buttons so they work like other shoulder buttons from controllers like the SNES ones. Saves the life of your finger and makes Mario Kart DD a lot like any other Mario Kart game.

not to hijack the topic or anything, but those hori controllers are absolute bliss for soul calibur, and i imagine any fighting game that uses the d-pad. i honestly don't think i would've made it through the game without the hori pad.
