There are some modchips that can be turned off so you can play your original games on xbox live.

It has nothing to do with being "unstable". It has to do with Microsoft being able to detect and ban those machines from Xbox live. Most mod chips come with an on/off switch, so that you can go online with your original games.

thats why theres two hardrives . you can use one for xbox live . also the chip turns off theres a switch on the front and heres some photos i recently dug up:
