I still haven't beaten it yet. I'm sure I could if I invested time into it, but I'd rather be playing Katamari. I doubt I could ever beat Scott's record though.

Thats definitely an impressive video, but there's no way you can convincce me that he didn't die several times. Some spots he just got through by luck. He put together a video of his best performance on each of those levels. Way better than I could do, though.

Naa.. this one is the real deal. There was a SMB 3 fake if I remember correctly.

Yes, SMB has laxed collision detection, but if you watch 4-2 you will see that this works agenst him as he falls a bit on the vine. This is the fastest path but a second or two can come off this.

Regardless if it is fake then it's a good one, keeping the score/coins right.. etc..

If it is then it was recorded to VHS and then to the computer. There are tale tale signs of analog VHS tape in the video.

I can tell you from experience that it is a tedious task to record a record. One little mistake in what you are doing means:

    Stop Tape
Rewind tape to right where this run starts
record game right before it starts
    restart game
and repeat until you get the record.

it takes a long time. I know when I got the 46k record on Simpsons Road Rage it sucked even more, because I was going for a high score, and not a fastest time. My run seriously takes at least 30 minutes, and having to do that all over sucks bad.

I can beat SMB pretty damn fast (about 6 minutes if I don't screw up), but damn, I don't think I'm hardcore enough to kill that record.

May be something to try sometime, though.

This is why you could just do it via emulators and / or a digital video feed. It would be a lot easier that way and easier to fake.
You are startled by a grim snarl. Before you, you see 1 Red dragon. Will your stalwart band choose to (F)ight or (R)un?

There would still be some tell-tale signs. For example, the aspect ratio would be incorrect (the NES does NOT have square pixels), the palette would be a bit off, sound would be a dead giveaway, and background scroll border clipping would be jumpy. You'd need an emulator that could recreate all of this perfectly.

Going to other direction, the best way to reduce suspicion that a video might be fake, record it at 640x480 (at least) with a high frame rate, and with 16 bit audio (mono should be fine). That should make it easier to see what emulator flaws aren't in the video. Heh.
