Strider is rare? Huh. My copy sits on the shelf at the other end of the row (Alex Kidd: SW is near the other end). AK seems to fetch far more.

Bear in mind this thread is about 2 years old But you're right, AKiSW was probably over-rated a bit.
Dick Tracy & some of the blue-label re-issues are also up there as far as rare US titles.

I mean who wants to buy a Buster Douglas game in the first place? A bad sports game I wouldn't give 5 bucks for is super-rare? I'd rather keep the collection incomplete.

The limited edition Quackshot had no US release?

Being a visual person, I always like to see pics of everything available for a system. It just helps me understand what I'm looking for, especially if I've never collected for that system before.

Having said all of this, does anyone know of a REALLY GOOD SMS site which talks about all of the releases in the US, and elsewhere - and has pics/scans of the case art, so you can see what is out there?

From this thread alone, there have been several items mentioned in different versions that I would have no idea about (blue label vs....)

Any suggestions are welcomed and appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Steve

I think that would qualify as ridiculously rare. I've been collecting SMS for a long time and I just got my first factory sealed game, Black Belt, and that game is about as common as they come.

Man, I'd have never thought someone would pay over 100 bucks for a game I wouldn't have bought when it was new in the first place, but, I'm not a "collector" yet, so i'm sure someday if i ever want a complete SMS collection I'd end up paying for it.

I'm sure that someone knows the answer to this question.

Is there a region lockout on SMS games?

Can a US Master System console play European games/Brazilian games, etc?

    Thanks for all the input!

    No.

Yes, although a tiny handful of games are glitchy on certain revisions of the US hardware.

Very cool. You seem to know a lot about the SMS.

I was curious, and I know that I need to check out that SMS Power site in more detail, but one of my earlier questions wasn't really answered.

    For example.

Racoon Lad said in a post above that a "True" US Alex Kidd in Shinobi World has a "blue" label. Does this mean label on the cart, or case insert?

SMS Power doesn't have a picture of the cart, and only the back of the insert.

Also, on the .txt. listings of the cart releases, it doesn't mention any variation, just that it was released in EUR/USA/BRA.

So, this is kind of what I'm looking to find out. What types of omissions are there that are noteworthy?

    Thanks again,
    Steve

It's the cart label. The blue labels are the only major US variations I'm aware of (there's loads of Euro variants). They're from 1989, just after Sega had re-acquired the distributions rights from Tonka.

These all exist with blue labels:

    Alex Kidd in Shinobi World
    California Games
    Double Dragon
    Enduro Racer
    Fantasy Zone
    Ghostbusters
    Out Run
    Reggie Jackson Baseball
    Slap Shot

Shinobi World & Slap Shot were released in the US only with blue labels. The rest were also released in red-label form, sometimes with slightly different covers (blue label versions typically have the genre tag on the top-left corner of the front cover, while the red-labels ones don't).

I also have a Rambo: First Blood Part II with a blue label.
