    Default PS2 Mem. Card = Itty Bitty HDD Function? O_o

    In the "you learn something new everyday" department...

    Did anyone else notice that while you can't save a PSX Game *to* a PS2 Memory Card, you can *copy* the data to it? I was glancing through my PStwo's manual and it mentioned that. Sure enough, it worked.

    Now I have a PS2 memory card that is specifically for PS1 memory save back ups.

    I wonder if this was always around, or just implemented as a "we're sorry" for no HDD support on the PStwo.

    It's like the time I found out the shoulder buttons could save a 'whoops' erase if you were quick enough.

    Anyone else ever discover odd stuff for their systems of choice?

    I'ts always been around. I used to keep a backup of my Gran Turismo 2 save file on a PS2 card when I had a buggy non-GH copy that would randomly freeze while saving and corrupt my file.

    Try putting Yoshi's Island in an SNES with a mouse in controller port 1 and turn it on - you'll get a message telling you to plug in a standard controller and once you do that and press start, it'll go to the game. Nothing amazing, but it's, worth a look.

    PS2's have always been able to do this.

    I just haven't had any need as I don't have that many PSX games.

    A few months after getting my Dreamcast I found that when formatting the visual memory units you could change the little logo that appears on the LCD. ^_^ (and the colour that it appears as on the system menu).

    Yeah, I knew about the 'copying PS One game data to a PS Two Memory card' trick. I found out when Suikoden 3 came out. In order to unlock some secrets and bonus stuff, you need to load your completed game save from Suikoden 2 when starting the game. Well, it made me wonder how the hell you're susposed to do that when Suikoden 2 is a PSX game and Suikoden 3 is PS2. I tried copying the saves over to my PS 2 memory card from the Memory Manager screen, and what do ya know, it worked!

    But to my knowledge, that's the only time you HAVE to copy PS1 data to a PS2 card, and it's optional in that case anyway (and not as usefull as data from Suikoden 1 to Suikoden 2 was.....)

    I think this functionality is more a cheap workaround for PS2 development libraries not having any PS1 memory card access routines (at least I've never seen anything like that used). So for games like DDR that let you put edit data onto a PS1 memory card and use it at the arcade, the best the game can do is create a PS1 save file on the PS2 memory card. Then you have to move that to the PS1 card yourself. It's clumsy, but it gets the job done.

    By the way, if you want to see some really insane memory card tomfoolery, check out the memory card exploit to actually run programs from the card using a PS1 CD as the trigger. Fun fun.
