Default PStwo and playing PS1 games (problem)

Don't know what's up, but I've only gotten my FINAL FANTASY IV disc to work once out of probably 20 tries on my PStwo. It gives me some screen that says PLEASE INSERT PLAYSTATION OR PLAYSTATION 2 SOFTWARE.

WTF? There are a few scratches (it is NOT bad condition-wise), but I tried several discs which had around the same, and they worked fine.

Are PS2's really finicky on scratches or am I looking towards a bum unit?

I've heard there are some games (such as Crash Twinsanity) that will crash or won't run on the PSTwo.

Didn't that Crash game just come out? Did Sony give out a list of games that won't work or are people going to have to go by trial and error on this? Anyways, this was a PS1 game that I couldn't get to work.

Either way though, I don't see why some games would not work. I can understand the HDD thing, but it reads the discs the same way, right?

Okay... Whew *hopefully this is the case, because I haven't tried very many games, but FFIV is the only disc of the maybe 10 I've tried that hasn't worked.

Like it was said before, FF Anthologies and Chronicles both had problems with random PS2's.

I believe it had something to do with those games (and a few others I can't remember) being ports from other systems... in other words the PS2 is sort of trying to emulate two different systems (PS1/SNES) at the same time and not being able to do it well.

IIRC, the few GB/GBC games that had problems on the GBA were ports as well.

Didn't FF Anthology and Chronicles have problems with the original PlayStation as well? I remember there being defective print runs.

Of course not, this is new Sony technology. YOU and other customers like you are the beta testers. I'm sure that Sony will let everyone know what games won't work once you guys let Sony know.

Just another example of why to not buy something when it first comes out.

Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 won't work on my PS2 and I tried two different copies but all the other PS1 games work on it.
    Me agree also.

Which makes me glad that I bought one of the last of the PS2 Online Packs, since I'm sure that the new PStwo will have some glaring pre-packaged incompatibility included as standard.

I've already heard from customers at work that the new Incredibles game won't play in their (older) PS2. Way to go, Sony...

The "ported-games-don't-work" theory probably has some credence, since I know that the Midway/Williams/Atari Arcade Greatest Hits discs won't run in a PS2 either. But then, how come the Mega Man and Street Fighter collections have no problems? Or the new King of Fighters set?

    Curious, eh?

God I hate Sony. I want to buy a new PS2 because my old one is having issues playing certain games, but I'm afraid to because the machines always seem to have problems.

    Default ok

Before we all go off on a huge bitch about how crap Sony are, don't forget that they are the first company to even bother to do the backwards compatibility thing. No less frustrating for those games that don't work .. but having spent so long complaining about being scammed by games companies who didn't even bother to attempt backwards compatiblity, let's give at least some credit where it is due.

    Just my tuppence worth ..

Didn't gameboy colors play gameboy games?

Aside from Incredibles, both the Madden CE and GTA San Andreas have huge problems with older PS2s (double density discs)

As far as some ports working and some not... just a theory but maybe the ones that set the PS2 up as an emulator for the old system instead of a "true" port are the ones that have problems?

    The 7800 played 2600 carts...

The PS2 uses emulation to "play" a PSX game. Sometimes the emulation doesn't work.

Nothing wrong with your PS2. Just buy a cheap PSX.

I just checked two of my PS2 systems and both loaded FF IV without a hitch. The FF CD was a new greatest hits version and the PS2's are two and three years old, respectively. I can only surmise that you are worshipping the wrong God.

...and so did the 5200. And the Genesis played Master System games (via the Power Base Converter), and the Super NES played Game Boy games (via the Super Game Boy).

It's not new, obviously. And who was bashing Sony? All of those previous efforts worked about as well overall as the PS2's backwards-compatibility does.

    Also...

...where GTA:SA is concerned, my brother's early-2001-vintage PS2 has had not a single hiccup, and I know the store I work at would have had many returns if this were indeed the case. As for Madden CE, I'll blame EA since that seems to be the thing to do this week.

For The Incredibles, we only had about eight copies to sell during its first week -- that gives it at least a one-in-eight chance of failure, which is not promising. (It's a THQ game, but then it's also a Disney license and those are usually solid. So the situation is a bit puzzling.)

Not all PS2's, early or not, all have problems with the dual density discs. Your one case hardly proves they don't We had significant complaints about both Madden CE and GTA:SA (usually, when asked, they had no problems with other games) from many customers, and nearly all of them had older PS2s.

Also, your sampling shows that at MOST it's a 1:8 problem ratio for Incredibles, not at least

    And who was bashing Sony?
He was probably referring to my statement of hating Sony, which was, more a comment of frustration than actual hatred - given that I have 122 PS2 games and counting, I'm obviously not going to tire of it soon.
